Women's Soccer Matches Up Against No. 18 Georgetown In BIG EAST Semifinal

2019 BIG EAST TOURNAMENT FIELD...  BIG EAST Tournament action kicked off on Sunday, Nov. 3 with four opponents facing off at first round host sites. Providence advanced to the semifinal round after defeating No. 3 Butler in penalty kicks, 5-4. The game entered penalty kicks tied at 1-1 after Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.) scored on a free kick from 30 yards out with eight minutes to play. The Friars will face off against No. 2 seeded Georgetown at 8:30 p.m. in Omaha, Neb. on Nov. 7. This marks the third-consecutive season the Friars will play in the BIG EAST Semifinal.

No. 4 Villanova made its way to the semifinal round after defeating No. 5 seeded DePaul, 1-0. Shannon Casey's 30th minute header proved to be the difference. This marks Villanova's first appearance in the BIG EAST Semifinal since the 2004 season.

Georgetown defeated Providence on Oct. 6 in Providence, R.I. earlier this season. The Hoyas used two first half goals from Amanda Carolan, before adding two insurance goals in the second half to fuel the victory.

SCOUTING THE HOYAS... The Hoyas earned a bye to the semifinal round of the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 2 seed. Georgetown finished the regular season with a 12-3-3 overall record and a 6-1-2 conference mark. The Hoyas are ranked No. 19 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll heading into Thursday's match.

Graduate Student Amanda Carolan leads the charge up front, leading the team in points (27) and goals (10). BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, Paula Germino-Watnick, trails Carolan by just one point. Germino-Watnick scored nine goals accompanied by eight assists. The defense backs up the offense, posting a 43-16 goal differential this season and allowing just 0.89 goals per game. Senior Meaghan Nally was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year. Georgetown saw three players named to the All-BIG EAST First team, a conference-high, two players named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and two players named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS... Junior Hannah McNulty leads the Friars with nine goals for 18 points. McNulty's four game-winning goals ranks her third in the BIG EAST in that category and 47th in the nation. She ranks first in the BIG EAST in shots per game (3.79) and sixth in the conference in goals (six). McNulty's game-winning goals came against UMass Lowell (9/5), in back-to-back games against Northeastern (9/22) and St. John's (9/28), and Creighton amidst a two-goal performance. Sophomore Elayna Grillakis (Lowell, Mass.) has had an impressive 2019 campaign, scoring five goals and adding two assists for 12 points. Four of her goals came in consecutive matches at Texas (9/19), vs. Northeastern (9/22), vs. St. John's (9/28) and at Marquette (10/3). Her goals at Texas and Marquette came in the golden goal overtime periods.

PROVIDENCE'S HISTORY IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT... Providence College captured the BIG EAST title in 1993 and has qualified for BIG EAST Tournament play eight times, since the championship began in 1993. The Friars finished as runner-up in the tournament in 2015, falling to Butler in the championship game, 1-0. Providence is 5-7-3 all-time in BIG EAST Tournament action.

HEAD COACH SAM LOPES IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT…Sixth-year Head Coach Sam Lopes is 2-5-3 all-time at the BIG EAST Tournament. In each of the ties, the Friars advanced to the next round on penalty kicks during the 2015 season, 2017 season, and 2019 Quarterfinal matchup on Sunday, Nov. 3 against the Butler Bulldogs. Lopes' two victories in the tournament came last season (2018) with a 1-0 victory against St. John's in the first round and in the first round during the 2015 campaign, defeating DePaul 1-0 en route to the program's second appearance all-time in the championship game.

SIX-STRAIGHT APPEARANCES…The Friars have qualified for their sixth-straight BIG EAST Tournament (2014-19). The only other time Providence made consecutive appearances in the BIG EAST Tournament dates back to the 1993 and 1994 seasons. Providence's only other appearance came during the 2011 season (1-1-0).

Hogan in Net… Goalkeeper Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) backed up her BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year honor to start the season by being named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year on Nov. 4. This marks the first time in program history a Providence player has earned a major award. She was also named to the All-BIG EAST First Team after being selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team the previous two seasons.

She started every game in net for the Friars this season, posting a 1.05 goals against average, 0.831 save percentage and 103 total saves. Hogan recorded four clean sheets against Hartford (8/29), UMass Lowell (9/5), at Texas (9/19) and DePaul (10/10). She has played 1799:42 in net this season, rankin her eighth in the country and first in the BIG EAST. Her 0.831 save percentage proves to be tops in the BIG EAST, she ranks first in the conference in saves (103) which also ranks 16th nationally.

ONE-GOAL GAMES… Fifteen of the Friars' 19 matches this season have been decided by one goal or less, with two draws on their record. Three of the Friars last four games have been decided by a goal. Providence's most recent one-goal match resulted in a 1-0 loss to Villanova on Oct. 29.

FOUR-GAME WIN STREAK… Providence's season-best four-game win streak came to an end on Sunday, Oct. 6 when the team hosted No. 11 Georgetown at Anderson Stadium. The Friars allowed the first goal of the match in the 28th minute after trading opportunities. The team failed to cut into the lead as No. 11 Georgetown prevailed, 4-0. Providence and Georgetown were the last remaining unbeaten BIG EAST teams heading into the matchup, with both holding a 2-0 conference record. This marked the first game this season that the Friars allowed more than one goal in a match.

Providence's second BIG EAST win came in the 106th minute against Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis. when sophomore Elayna Grillakis scored her third golden goal of the year and sixth career goal. The goal tied her for the team-lead in goals (five) with Hannah McNulty. Kelsie Cummings scored her first career goal in the 45th minute on a feed from Alessandra Arace to gain a 1-0 advantage. The Golden Eagles found the equalizer in the 79th minute before Providence prevailed in double overtime with the victory. Shelby Hogan recorded five saves on the night to improve to 7-3-1.
