PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team fell on Friday, Nov 22. to the DePaul Blue Demons in four sets. The Friars took the first set, 27-25 before the Blue Demons won the next three (25-23, 25-22, 25-19). Providence falls to 6-24 overall, 1-16 in the BIG EAST and DePaul improves to 14-15 overall, 6-11 in the BIG EAST.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: After facing a 6-3 early deficit, Providence claimed four out of the next five points to tie the set at seven. The score was knotted at 16 before the Blue Demons rattled off three straight points, tying their largest lead of the set. Providence battled back to win three out of the next four points to tie the set at 20. DePaul led, 25-24, before Providence took the next three points to win the set, 27-25.
Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) paced the Friar offense with seven kills on 13 total attacks.
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) recorded a set-high 13 assists.
Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) and
Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) led the defense with four digs each.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: The set was tied at nine before the Friars took five straight points behind two blocks and a kill from
Lindsey Schaible (Tampa, Fla.), giving the Friars a 14-9 lead. Providence was up, 20-16, before DePaul took five straight points to take the lead, 21-20. The Blue Demons would hang on to win the set, 25-23.
Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) led the team with four kills on 10 total attacks.
Barber held team-highs in assists (eight) and digs (five).
Caroline LaMacchia (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) had five digs.
As a team, the Friars recorded five team blocks.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The set was knotted at eight before DePaul took five straight points to gain an 13-8 advantage. Providence battled back to take back the lead, 16-15. The Friars led 18-16 before the Blue Demons went on a pivotal 5-1 run to regain the lead, 21-19. The Blue Demons took the set, 25-22.
Root led the Friars with three kills on nine total attacks.
Barber had five assists.
LaMacchia led the defensive end with five digs.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence broke a 6-6 tie by taking four out of the next five points (10-7). After the score was 12-8, DePaul took back the lead, 17-13, after a 9-1 momentum-changing run. The Blue Demons went on to win the set, 25-19.
Alderson registered a set-high five kills on seven total attacks. Alderson held a .571 hitting percentage.
Barber held team-highs in assists (five) and digs (three). LaMacchia chipped in with three digs.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
Barber tallied her 20
th double-double on the season with 31 assists and 12 digs.
LaMacchia had a match-high 16 digs.
Alderson and Root led the Friar offense with 13 kills apiece.
Alderson registered seven blocks on the night.
WHAT'S NEXT: Providence finishes the regular season at home against No. 9 Marquette Golden Eagles on Sunday, November 24 at 1:00 p.m. The Golden Eagles defeated the Friars in straight sets in their first meeting on Oct. 11.
