Women's Soccer Set To Face Butler In BIG EAST Tournament First Round

Friars and Bulldogs will kick off at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3 in Indianapolis, Ind.

2019 BIG EAST TOURNAMENT FIELD... The field is set for the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament and play begins on Sunday, Nov. 3.

FRIARS ENTER 2019 BIG EAST TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND ACTION... The No. 6 seed Providence College women's soccer team enters BIG EAST Tournament action against No. 3 seed Butler University. The match will be played at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind. on Sunday, Nov. 3. Opening kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. Providence finished the 2019 season tied with Marquette for sixth place in the standings, but will be the sixth seed by virtue of tiebreaking procedures.

SERIES HISTORY VS. BUTLER… Providence posts a 3-8 all-time record against the Bulldogs. The Friars have dropped each the last five matches between the two programs. In the most recent meeting on Oct. 24, the Bulldogs claimed a 1-0 victory in Providence, R.I. Butler led in shots (16-11) and shots on goal (6-1), while the Friars held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
 
FRIARS AND BULLDOGS IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT…Providence is 0-3 all-time vs. Butler in the BIG EAST Tournament. The two teams have met in three of the last four seasons during the league playoffs, including each of the last two seasons. The Friars are 0-1 vs. Butler in the first round and 0-2 against the Bulldogs in the BIG EAST semifinals. Last season, Butler earned a 3-2 semifinal victory over the Friars. The Bulldogs held a 3-1 lead late in the match before Providence put up a late goal in the 88thminute for a 3-2 final.
 
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS... Butler enters the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 3 seed and holds a 10-5-3 overall record. The Bulldogs have won four of their last six matches, but are coming off a 2-0 loss to Xavier in the regular-season finale (Oct. 31). Katie Soderstrom leads the Bulldogs in points (23), GOALS (eight) and assists (seven). She is one of three players to reach double figures in the scoring column, joined by Anja Savich and Macy Miller. Savich owns 19 points on seven goals and five assists, while Miller enters the tournament with 15 points on five goals and five assists.

PROVIDENCE'S HISTORY IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT... Providence College captured the BIG EAST title in 1993 and has qualified for BIG EAST Tournament play eight times, since the championship began in 1993. The Friars finished as runner-up in the tournament in 2015, falling to Butler in the championship game, 1-0. Providence is 5-7-2 all-time in BIG EAST Tournament action. 
 
HEAD COACH SAM LOPES IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT…Sixth-year Head Coach Sam Lopes is 2-5-2 all-time at the BIG EAST Tournament. In each of the ties, the Friars advanced to the next round on penalty kicks during the 2015 and 2017 seasons. Lopes' two victories in the tournament came last season (2018) with a 1-0 victory against St. John's in the first round. Providence also defeated DePaul, 1-0, in the first round during the 2015 campaign, en route to the program's second appearance all-time in the championship game. 
 
SIX-STRAIGHT APPEARANCES…The Friars have qualified for their sixth-straight BIG EAST Tournament (2014-19). The only other time Providence made consecutive appearances in the BIG EAST Tournament dates back to the 1993 and 1994 seasons. Providence's only other appearance came during the 2011 season (1-1-0).
 
PLAYERS TO WATCH… Hannah McNulty leads the Friars in scoringheading into the BIG EAST Tournament with 16 points on eight goals. Four of her eight goals have been game winners. She ranks tied for eighth in the BIG EAST in goals scored, tied for eighth in goals per game (0.41) and tied for second in game-winning goals (four). Elayna Grillakis is second on the team with 12 points on five goals and two assists. She has recorded three game-winning goals and is tied for fifth in the BIG EAST in that category. Four players on the roster have scored one goal each for Providence.
  
HOGAN IN NET… Shelby Hogan has played 1689:42 minutes in goal for the Friars and has posted four shut-out victories on her way to an 8-8-2 record. She owns a 1.07 goals against average and a 0.826 save percentage.
 
ONE-GOAL GAMES… Fourteen of the Friars' 18 matches this season have been decided by one goal or less, with two draws on their record. Three of the Friars last four games have been decided by a goal. Providence's most recent one-goal match resulted in a 1-0 loss to Villanova on Oct. 29.
 
FOUR-GAME WIN STREAK… Providence's season-best four-game win streak came to an end on Sunday, Oct. 6 when the team hosted No. 11 Georgetown at Anderson Stadium. The Friars allowed the first goal of the match in the 28th minute after trading opportunities. The team failed to cut into the lead as No. 11 Georgetown prevailed, 4-0. Providence and Georgetown were the last remaining unbeaten BIG EAST teams heading into the matchup, with both holding a 2-0 conference record. This marked the first game this season that the Friars allowed more than one goal in a match.
 
Providence's second BIG EAST win came in the 106th minute against Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis. when sophomore Elayna Grillakis scored her third golden goal of the year and sixth career goal. The goal tied her for the team-lead in goals (five) with Hannah McNultyKelsie Cummings scored her first career goal in the 45th minute on a feed from Alessandra Arace to gain a 1-0 advantage. The Golden Eagles found the equalizer in the 79th minute before Providence prevailed in double overtime with the victory. Shelby Hogan recorded five saves on the night to improve to 7-3-1.
