KENOSHA, Wis.- The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams competed at the BIG EAST Championships at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross-Country Course in Kenosha, Wis. The Friar women placed fourth (92 points) and the Friar men finished fifth (146 points). Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) crossed the line first for the Friar women, placing fourth overall, in a time of 21:56.5. Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) led the men with a 22nd place finish in a time of 26:46.0.

Coffin and Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) were in the lead pack off the gun. As the race progressed through the muddy and wet conditions, Coffin remained in the lead pack with two runners from Villanova and another from Xavier. With 400 meters to go Coffin made a move for third but was outkicked in the finishing strides placing fourth (21:56.5). Coffin's finish improved 20 spots from last season's BIG EAST Championship.

Wheeler and freshman Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) ran in the chase pack for most of the race. In the back trails, both Friars moved up in spots as the race progressed. Wheeler went on to finish seventh (22:06.2) and Tuck finishing in 11th (22:19.0). The finishes by Coffin, Wheeler and Tuck earned All-BIG EAST Honors.

This is Coffin's first All-BIG EAST Honor for cross-country and Wheeler's fourth of her career.

On the men's side, Rocha, Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) were there first three to cross the line for the Friars. Rocha finished 22nd (26:46.0), Gallagher finished 26th (26:58.4) and Carleo finished 29th (27:10.0).

The Friar men and women toe the line next in Buffalo, N.Y. on Friday, November 15th for the NCAA Northeast Regionals.
