Championship Sunday
Providence will kick off against Georgetown in the BIG EAST Championship on Sunday, Nov. 17. The match between the No. 3 seeded Friars and the No. 1 seeded Hoyas will begin at 12:00 p.m. and will be televised on FS2.
BIG EAST Championship All-Time
The Friars are appearing in the Championship Game for the fifth time in program history and first since 2014. Providence is 1-3 all-time in BIG EAST Championships, capturing the title in 2014. The Friars have never appeared in the final as the No. 3 seed, but hold a 3-1 record as the No. 3 seed in all tournament games.
How the Friars Got Here
Providence hosted Marquette in a First Round game on Saturday, Nov. 9. The Friars earned their 10
th shutout of the season, defeating the Golden Eagles, 3-0.
Esben Wolf (Copenhagen, Denmark) scored the eventual game winner in the 29
th minute off of a corner kick from
Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal).
Trevor Davock (Medway, Mass.) increased the lead in the 62
nd minute, finishing a
Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.) rebound.
Paulo Lima (Lisbon, Portugal) capped the game with a 79
th minute goal.
The Friars outshot Marquette 13-5.
Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) made two saves in the match.
Providence then went on the road to face No. 2 seed St. John's in a Semifinal match-up (Nov. 13). The Friars prevailed with a 2-1 victory. Second-half goals from
Paulo Lima and
Davis Smith (Amherst, Mass.) were the difference. Lima's goal came in the 50
th minute off of a corner kick from
Joao Serrano. Smith's came in the 87
th minute, as he knocked home a rebound in front.
Danny Griffin and
Trevor Davock both assisted the play.
Aviza made four saves for the Friars, who outshot the Red Storm 16-10 in the match.
Last Time Against Georgetown
The Friars and Hoyas met earlier this season on Shaw Field (Sept. 28). Georgetown prevailed with a 2-1 victory in the teams' second BIG EAST game of the season. After a scoreless first half, Derek Dodson put the Hoyas up 1-0 on a penalty kick in the 48
th minute. Foster McCune doubled Georgetown's lead in the 75
th minute, finishing a cross from Dodson. The Friars responded with an 80
th minute tally from
Andualem Chisholm (Attleboro, Mass.), but were unable to equalize.
Providence outshot Georgetown 11-5, however Georgetown held a 5-3 advantage in shots on target. Aviza made three saves for the Friars.
Scouting the Friars
Providence currently sits at 14-5 overall. The Friars finished BIG EAST Conference play with a 6-3 record and entered the post-season as the No. 3 seed. Lima (17 points) and Serrano (16 points) lead the Friars offensively. Serrano holds the team lead in assists (eight), while Lima leads the squad in goals (eight).
Davis Smith has 14 points on five goals and four assists. Davock has four goals and five assists for 13 points. Wolf is the other Friar with double-digit points, as he has 11 on three goals and five assists.
Aviza has started all 19 games in net for the Friars. He holds a .724 save percentage and a 0.86 goals against average. The redshirt senior has made 42 saves and has eight individual shutouts.
BIG EAST Awards
Five Friars earned All-BIG EAST recognition, as announced by the league on Nov. 11. Mendonca and Serrano were named to the First Team, while Lima earned Second Team honors. Griffin and Aviza were selected for the newly-added Third Team. Providence has now had at least one First Team selection in five-consecutive seasons.
Six Straight
The Friars have posted six-straight victories, which is the team's longest winning streak this season. The Friars' last loss came on Oct. 19 at DePaul. Providence has defeated five different conference opponents, picking up three shutouts and two wins over ranked opponents in the six-game span.
Outshooting Opponents
Providence has outshot opponents 313-112 this season. In all 19 games this season, Providence has recorded more shots than its opponent. The Friars rank fifth nationally in shots per game, averaging 17.26.
Corner Kick Success
The Friars rank eighth nationally in corner kicks per game, averaging 6.84. Providence has taken 130 total corners on the season and limited opponents to just 37.
The Friars have been successful converting on these opportunities, scoring eight goals from corner kicks this season. 24% of Providence's goals on the year have come from corner kick plays.
Stacking Up Shutouts
As a team, Providence has 10 total shutouts this season. Aviza has eight individually and the other two are combined shutouts.
Limiting OT
The Friars have only played in two overtime games this season. Both have resulted in victories, as Providence defeated UConn on Oct. 8 in the 92
nd minute and bested Creighton on Oct. 26 in the 98
th minute. Providence has not tied a single game so far this season. The last time that happened was 2016, when Providence went 15-7.
NCAA Tournament
Following the BIG EAST Championship the Friars will await selection for the NCAA Tournament. The 48-team field for the Division I NCAA Men's Soccer Championship will be unveiled on Monday, Nov. 18 at 1:00 p.m. on NCAA.com. Competition begins with the First Round on Thursday, Nov. 21. The top 16 teams in the field will receive byes and compete in the Second Round on Sunday, Nov. 24. Both rounds will be held on campus sites.
Scouting the Hoyas
Georgetown currently holds a 14-1-3 overall record and finished the BIG EAST regular season at 7-0-2. The Hoyas reached the Championship after a thrilling shootout victory over fifth-seeded Butler. The teams played to a 2-2 draw before the Hoyas advanced, 4-3, on penalty kicks. The game marked the first time Georgetown has allowed more than one goal to an opponent all season long.
The Hoyas average 2.11 goals per game, while only allowing 0.44. They've outshot opponents 326-141 over the course of 18 games.
Who to Watch
Derek Dodson leads the team offensively with 20 points. He's scored seven goals and added six assists in his junior campaign. Classmate Jacob Montes leads the team in goals, with eight, and has 18 total points. Despite only playing in 10 games due to injury, standout senior Achara has six goals and four assists for 16 points. Junior Paul Rothrock has a team-leading seven assists for the Hoyas.
Sophomore Giannis Nikopolidis and freshman Tomas Romero have each started nine games in net. They each hold a 0.43 goals against average have seven wins. Nikopolidis holds a 0.879 save percentage and has three shutouts, while Romero has six shutouts and a 0.852 save percentage.
