Men’s Soccer Travels to UConn For Final Non-Conference Game

The Friars take on the Huskies this Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team heads to UConn this Tuesday, Oct. 8. The match is set for kick-off at 1 p.m. at Dillon Stadium in Storrs, Conn.

Scouting the Huskies
UConn recently fell to 3-6-1 on the season and 0-2 in the American Conference. The Huskies lost to Memphis, 1-0, at home on Friday, Oct. 4 in their second conference game of the season. They previously tied with Dartmouth on the road, 2-2 (Oct. 1). Jordan Hall leads the squad with 19 points with scoring nine goals and tallying one assist. Dayonn Harris comes in next with 10 points with eight assists and one goal. Scoring has been spread out throughout many players for the squad. Adhan Tait, Robin Lapert and Cole Venner have also accumulated points for the Huskies. Sophomore Gianluca Catalano has started in net for all of their games. He has a 1.75 goals against average and a 0.600 save percentage.
 
Scouting the Friars 
The Friars are coming off a loss at home to make their record to 6-4-0. They recently lost to Butler, 3-1, on Oct. 4. The Friars took on No. 2 Georgetown for their second BIG EAST game of the season and fell short, 2-1. Previously, Providence was coming off a four-game win streak at home including wins over Brown, 1-0, and Seton Hall, 1-0, in their BIG EAST home-opener of the season.  On Wednesday, Sept. 25 Ramzi Qawasmy scored the game winning goal in the 77th minute which marked his first career goal. On Friday, Sept. 20 Paulo Lima (Lisbon, Portugal) scored the game-winning goal in the 26th minute on a header from Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) against Seton Hall . On Monday, Sept. 16 the Friars had a 1-0 win over Harvard University. Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) scored the game winning goal in the 21st minute from Davis Smith (Amherst, Mass.) and Andualem Chisholm (Attleboro, Mass.). On Saturday, Sept. 14 the Friars defeated Sacred Heart, 4-0. Four different players scored for the Friars. Smith scored his second goal of the year on a header and has tallied seven points on the season. Kevin Vang (Cranston, R.I.) scored his first career goal to put the Friars ahead, 4-0.
 
Serrano leads the team in points with nine on three goals and three assists. Chisholm and Smith have both recorded seven points on the season. Trevor Davock (Medway, Mass.) recorded two goals and two assists for six total points. Lima has scored two goals giving him four points.  Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) has started every game for the Friars. He has a 0.94 goals against average and a .710 save percentage.
 
Fresh Friar Faces
Providence's roster welcomes eight newcomers to the squad for the 2019 season. Four of the nine have seen action for the Friars. Transfers, Trevor Davock and Davis Smith have both started for Friars and lead the team in points. Austin Aviza has started all ten games in net and has recorded six shutouts on the season. Esben Wolf (Copenhagen, Denmark) has started every game recording three assists. Gage Raftery (Seattle, Wash) has also seen minutes for the Friars. 
 
Outshooting Opponents
Providence has outshot their opponents 171-52 throughout the season. The Friars held Butler to seven shots in their last match-up.  
 
One-Goal Games
Through nine games, seven of the Friars' contests have been decided by just one goal. Four of those seven have been wins, including the recent 1-0 victory over Brown (Sept. 25).
 
Preseason Poll and Awards 
Tiago Mendonca was voted to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team entering the 2019 season. In the coaches poll, the Friars were picked to finish third in the conference standings. Georgetown, the reigning tournament champion, was selected to finish first with nine first place votes (81 points). Creighton, who finished first in regular season play last season, was picked second (68 points). Providence (65 points), Marquette (59 points) and Xavier (44 points) round out the top half of the poll. Butler (40 points), St. John's (33 points), Seton Hall (28 points), DePaul (21 points) and Villanova (11 points) finish out the standings.
 
Up Next
The Friars come back home to play Marquette on Saturday, Oct. 12. The game is set for kick-off at 7:00 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
