Men’s Soccer Hosts Butler for Homecoming Weekend

The Friars take on the Bulldogs on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Providence R.I.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team will host Butler University this Friday, Oct. 4. The match is set for kick-off at 7 p.m. on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.

Scouting the Bulldogs
Butler recently fell to 4-4-0 on the season after a 1-0 loss at home to St. John's (Sept. 28). They are 0-2 in conference play. The Bulldogs won, 2-1, against Indiana on Sept. 24. On Sept. 20, Butler lost their first BIG EAST game of the season to Georgetown, 3-0.  Scoring has been spread out throughout many players for the squad. Six players have recorded points for the Bulldogs. Brandon Guhl leads the pack with eight total points with four goals for the season. He holds a shot percentage of .500. Wilmer Cabrera, Jr. and Alex Lehtinen come up next with five points each. Jack Haywood, Logan Lee, and Griffin DeBolt round out the pack. Sophomore Gabirel Gjergji has started in net for all of their games. He has a 1.22 goals against average and a 0.773 save percentage.
 
Scouting the Friars 
The Friars are coming off a loss on the road to make their record to 6-3-0. The Friars took on No. 2 Georgetown for their second BIG EAST game of the season and fell short, 2-1. Previously, Providence was coming off a four-game win streak at home including wins over Brown, 1-0, and Seton Hall, 1-0, in their BIG EAST home-opener of the season.  On Wednesday, Sept. 25 Ramzi Qawasmy scored the game winning goal in the 77th minute which marked his first career goal. On Friday, Sept. 20 Paulo Lima (Lisbon, Portugal) scored the game-winning goal in the 26th minute on a header from Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) against Seton Hall . On Monday, Sept. 16 the Friars had a 1-0 win over Harvard University. Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) scored the game winning goal in the 21st minute from Davis Smith (Amherst, Mass.) and Andualem Chisholm (Attleboro, Mass.). On Saturday, Sept. 14 the Friars defeated Sacred Heart, 4-0. Four different players scored for the Friars. Smith scored his second goal of the year on a header and has tallied seven points on the season. Kevin Vang (Cranston, R.I.) scored his first career goal to put the Friars ahead, 4-0.
 
Chisholm and Serrano have both recorded seven points on the season. Trevor Davock (Medway, Mass.) recorded two goals and two assists for six total points. Lima has scored two goals giving him four points.  Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) has started every game for the Friars. He has a 0.70 goals against average and a .760 save percentage.
 
Stacking Up Against the BIG EAST
Providence is currently ranked fourth in the BIG EAST Standings (1-1) after playing two games. They are first in the league in shots taken with 156 which is an average of 17.3 taken a game. They are also first in corner kicks they have taken with 51.
 
Austin Aviza is ranked fifth in the league in goals against average with a 0.70 and seventh overall in saves with 19.  
 
Fresh Friar Faces
Providence's roster welcomes eight newcomers to the squad for the 2019 season. Four of the nine have seen action for the Friars. Transfers, Trevor Davock and Davis Smith have both started for Friars and lead the team in points. Austin Aviza has started all nine games in net and has recorded six shutouts on the season. Esben Wolf (Copenhagen, Denmark) has started every game recording three assists. Gage Raftery (Seattle, Wash) has also seen minutes for the Friars. 
 
Outshooting Opponents
Providence has outshot their opponents 156-45 throughout the season. The Friars held Brown to just three shots and Seton Hall to five.
 
One-Goal Games
Through nine games, seven of the Friars' contests have been decided by just one goal. Four of those seven have been wins, including the recent 1-0 victory over Brown (Sept. 25).
 
Preseason Poll and Awards 
Tiago Mendonca was voted to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team entering the 2019 season. In the coaches poll, the Friars were picked to finish third in the conference standings. Georgetown, the reigning tournament champion, was selected to finish first with nine first place votes (81 points). Creighton, who finished first in regular season play last season, was picked second (68 points). Providence (65 points), Marquette (59 points) and Xavier (44 points) round out the top half of the poll. Butler (40 points), St. John's (33 points), Seton Hall (28 points), DePaul (21 points) and Villanova (11 points) finish out the standings.
 
Up Next
The Friars head on the road and take on New England rival UConn. The match is set for kick-off on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
