PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College field hockey team defeated BIG EAST foe Quinnipiac, 3-2, in a shootout on Oct. 18. The Friars improved to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the BIG EAST Conference, while Quinnipiac dropped to 3-11 (1-4 BIG EAST).
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) intercepted a Quinnipiac pass and found
Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) for a goal to put the Friars up 1-0 at the 8:08 mark of the first quarter. It was Mendez's team-leading ninth goal of the season.
• Quinnipiac evened the score in the second quarter as Amanda Blum (Langhorne, P.A.) picked up a turnover deep in the Friars' defensive zone and took goalkeeper
Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) one-on-one for the unassisted goal at 29:29.
• The two teams went into halftime tied, 1-1, and remained tied at the conclusion of the third quarter.
• Quinnipiac took the lead (2-1) in the fourth quarter at 48:59 as Julianna Capello found Valerie Perkins at the left post for the score.
• Providence College senior
Allyson Parker (Orange, Mass.) tied the game just under a minute later as she converted a penalty-stroke opportunity.
• The match proceeded through two scoreless overtime periods and into a shootout.
• Rice made three saves in the shootout for Providence to help solidify the victory.

The Friars will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 20 against non-conference foe Merrimack at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and will serve as the program's annual Youth Day, which will feature a promotional giveaway.
