Michael O’Leary led the Friars with a fourth-place finish (24:50).
BOSTON, Mass.- The Providence College men's cross-country team won their second meet of the season, the New England Championships, at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. on Oct. 12. The Friars came in first out of 25 teams, tallying 42 points. This is Providence's 26th New England Championships victory, first since 2014. Michael O'Leary (St. James, N.Y.) paced the Friars with a fourth-place finish (24:50).
The men left the line in the chase pack trailing an American International College runner. The chase pack consisted of O'Leary, Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.), David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) and Sean Meehan (East Greenwich, R.I.). The four Friars ran the course together for a majority of the race, paced by Rosas and Rocha. Right before the last hill and finish, O'Leary broke away from the Friar pack to finish first for Providence, fourth overall (24:50).
Rocha (24:54), Rosas (24:55), Meehan (25:10) and Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) rounded out the top five for the Friars. Karamanolis finished with a time of 25:19. They finished fifth, sixth, 13th and 14th, respectively.
In the sub-varsity 8k race, Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) would take the victory by fourteen seconds (25:25). The Friars' success would continue on the day with winning the sub-varsity race.
The Friar men will toe the line next on Oct. 25 at 3:00 p.m. in New Britain, Conn. for the CCSU Mini Meet.
