PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the no. 15/13 Marquette Golden Eagles, 79-68, in Milwaukee, Wis. on Sunday, Jan. 20. Despite winning the last three of four matchups between these two teams, the Friars lost their first matchup on Sunday in the newly built home of Marquette, the Fiserv Forum.
Sophomore center
Nate Watson (Arlington, Va.) tied his career-high in points (21) and added five rebounds. Watson proved to be the go-to man down the stretch, tallying 16 points in the second half.
The Friars capitalized on a 7-0 run to bring the game to it's first media timeout at the 13:54 mark. Providence led 11-8 due in large part to their offensive rebounding, where they lead the BIG EAST averaging 12 offensive boards per game. Jimmy Nichols Jr. (Conway, S.C.) brought down two of their nine offensive rebounds in the first half.
Watson capped off the run with a dunk in the paint, while being fouled by Joey Houser. Watson converted the free throw to give them an early four-point lead.
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) made a statement in the opening minutes, stripping Markus Howard in their full court press followed by a dunk on the other end with Howard on his side. Diallo finished with 16 points and six rebounds.
Head Coach
Ed Cooley made an emphasis on protecting the paint with their two-three matchup zone. Marquette's first five field goals came on three-point attempts. Marquette did not score a two-point basket until the there was 4:36 remaining in the first half, one of just two two-point field goals in the half for the Golden Eagles.
Nichols Jr. played extended minutes in the first half, his efforts on the offensive glass and two blocks on the defensive end made it an easy decision for Cooley. Nichols final line included seven points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Kris Monroe (Creedmoor, N.C.) extended Providence's lead to seven, 21-14, after knocking down their first trey of the afternoon from the right wing. Providence led 23-14 with 8:22 left in the half.
The Friars outscored the Golden Eagles 12-11 in the final eight minutes to hand Providence a 33-25 lead heading into the locker room. Providence outrebounded Marquette, 27-15, in the opening 20 minutes, Providence's largest lead in the half proved to be nine.
The second half opened as a back-and-forth affair, prior to Diallo picking up his third foul with 17:13 left to play, Nichols Jr. put his mark on the game with a put back dunk.
Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) put up a shot that floated over the rim, Nichols Jr. ran onto from the left corner and hammered home. Providence held a 37-34 lead with 15:30 left to play.
The Golden Eagles gained the lead with 13:11 left to play, 40-39, for the first time since they led 2-0 in the opening two minutes.
Marquette extended their run to their largest lead of the game at the time, 54-47, after Ed Morrow finished a layup in the paint with 8:28 remaining. Providence answered once again with Nichols Jr. finishing a spin move in the paint.
White finally etched his name in the scoring column at the 5:54 mark, he knocked down a much needed three for the Friars to cut the lead to 56-54.
Providence started to pound the ball down low once Theo John exited in the second half due to foul trouble. Watson finished a dunk off a

The Golden Eagles started to pull away with 3:58 left to play, after gaining a 65-59 cushion they knocked down multiple clutch threes to close the game.
Sam Hauser led the Golden Eagles with 25 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
The Friars will return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Xavier to face the Musketeers at 6:30 pm on FS1.
