PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's basketball fell in their first double overtime game of the season on Saturday afternoon to the Georgetown Hoyas, 96-90. The game was played in Washington, D.C. in the Capital One Arena.
Nate Watson (Arlington, Va.) and
Drew Edwards (Perry Hall, Md.) each recorded a career high for PC, with 21 and 19 points respectively.
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) added a double -double with 24 points and 13 rebounds. was called for his second start of the season and scored the first basket for the Friars in the paint. Watson finished 6-7 in the first half for a total of 12 points. He finished with a career-high 21 points on 8-11 shooting in the game. Edwards was 5-7 from the field, including 3-4 from three.
Both teams traded three-point baskets early between
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) and Mac McClung of Georgetown. Providence led 10-9 when they reached the first media timeout at 15:44.
Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) gave the offense a spark off the bench, he knocked down an elbow jumper before a layup in the paint on back-to-back possessions. Young shot 3-4 in the first half for a total of six points.
Diallo played strong in the first half, connecting for nine points including four rebounds. Diallo filled the stat sheet with his double-double. He finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists. Diallo's 13 rebounds marked a career-high.
Drew Edwards (Perry Hall, Md.) scored a career-high 19 points off the bench. He gave the Friars their biggest lead of the first half after knocking down a corner three to give them a 32-23 lead with 5:30 remaining in the half. The Hoyas outscored Providence 11-4 in the last five minutes to head to the locker room.
The Friars defense helped build their 36-34 lead at the half.
Makai Ashton-Langford (Worcester, Mass.) forced two charges while Edwards forced a turnover on a push-off. Providence forced 10 turnovers in the half and 17 in the game.
Cooley brought
Kris Monroe (Creedmoor, N.C.) off the bench in the second half, as he has saw an increase in minutes over the last few games. Monroe scored back-to-back baskets for the Friars in the second half giving them a 44-41 lead with 14:04 to play.
Georgetown regained the lead for the first time since they led 11-9 in the first half after James Akinjo knocked down a wing three. Georgetown led 47-46 with 12:05 remaining.
Isaiah Jackson (Gainesville, Fla.) gave Providence the lead with 7:49 on the clock after scoring a layup in the paint while being fouled. Ashton-Langford delivered a cross-court bounce pass to Jackson on the block for the basket.
Edwards caught fire late in the second half, he scored a layup in transition off a dish from Diallo before knocking down a wing three to give them a 60-56 lead with 6:45 left in the game.
Ashton-Langford found Watson wide open in the paint for his first basket of the second half, giving them a 62-60 lead at the 5:09 mark. He finished with eight assists in the game which tied his career-high.
Both sides traded baskets for the rest of the game leading to a 68-68 score. Providence shot 8-8 down the stretch from the free throw line to put them in position to win.
Providence and Georgetown were knotted at 68 with 1:22 left in the game, Georgetown broke the scoring with a dunk in the paint to give them a 70-68 lead. Diallo answered with a three with 25 seconds remaining. The Hoyas failed to connect on a three before Jackson grabbed the rebound and got fouled with 3.9 seconds remaining. Jackson knocked down both free throws to give the Friars a three-point lead before Mac McClung banked in a three-point basket at the buzzer to force overtime.
The Hoyas held a 78-75 lead with 2:21 remaining in overtime after James Akinjo knocked down one of two free throws.
The Friars had the three-point answer once again. Edwards knocked down a wing three before Jackson and Diallo hit threes on the following possessions to give the Friars an 84-80 lead with 28 seconds remaining.
Georgetown put Diallo at the line with 15 seconds left in the game, the 69 percent free throw shooter went 2-2 from the line to give the Friars an 86-83 lead before the Hoyas called a timeout with 10 seconds left. James Akinjo knocked down a three from the same location as McClung in regulation to force double overtime.
Double overtime proved to be a back-and-forth affair. Georgetown gained a 93-90 lead with 33 seconds remaining before Diallo missed a deep three, the Hoyas sealed the win with free throws to give them a 96-90 win.
Jessie Govan paced the Hoyas with a double-double, tallying 33 points and 14 rebounds.
