David Duke scored a game-high 18 points and registered a career-high three three-pointers.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's basketball team earned it's first BIG EAST Conference win on Tuesday, 72-63, over the Seton Hall Pirates. The Friars trailed by three at half but turned Seton Hall over 12 times in the second half, leading to the nine-point win.
Freshman David Duke (Providence, R.I.) scored a game-high 18 points and converted a career-high three three-pointers.
Junior Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) opened the scoring for the Friars with a layup in the paint to give them an early lead. The Pirates then used a 12-4 run to bring the game to it's first media timeout, giving Seton Hall a 12-6 advantage with 14:32 left in the first half.
Diallo finished with 15 points while adding eight rebounds and five assists, he currently leads the BIG EAST in rebounding four games into conference play.
Senior Isaiah Jackson (Gainesville, Fla.) subbed in for Diallo at the 16:08 mark and finally got on the board with 13:23 left in the half, connecting on a trey from the left wing to cut the lead to just 14-11.
Junior Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) brought some energy to the Dunkin' Donuts Center crowd after a sluggish start, he finished a strong two-handed slam on the baseline to cut the lead to 20-18.
Seton Hall's Myles Powell knocked down his first field goal of the night with a deep three before finishing an acrobatic layup to push their lead to 25-18 the next possession, Providence Head Coach Ed Cooley was forced to call a timeout with 7:25 remaining in the half.
The Friars kept Powell in check, holding him to just 12 points in the game and just three in the second half.
Providence's third three of the night came on a Kris Monroe (Creedmoor, N.C.) deep three from the top of the key, that marked Monroe's third three of the season to cut the lead to, 29-25, with 3:48 left in the first half.
Providence shot 3-10 from three-point territory in the opening 20 minutes compared to Seton Hall's 3-7 shooting from three-point range.
Sophomore Nate Watson (Arlington, Va.) gave Providence its first lead since leading 2-0 in the opening minute. Watson scored five consecutive points for the Friars to give them a 30-29 lead with 1:16 left until the break. Quincy McKnight and Miles Powell both scored in the paint prior to the half to give the Pirates a 33-30 lead.
Watson scored a career-high 21 points last time out and finished tonight with nine points and four rebounds, he forced Mamukelashvili of Seton Hall to miss most of the game because of foul trouble.
Providence tied the game at 35-35 with a contested David Duke (Providence, R.I.) three at the 17:20 mark. Diallo gave the Friars the lead the next possession with a layup in the paint, giving Providence a 37-35 advantage.
Duke and Diallo combined to score the Friars' first 10 points in the second half. Providence used a 10-0 run over a 2:16 span to open their largest lead of the game, giving them a 47-38 advantage with 12:55 remaining.
Seton Hall narrowed the gap to four, 47-43, with 10:15 remaining before implementing a full-court press. The Pirates knotted the game at 49-49 just shortly after with 9:05 left in the game.
The Friars held a 61-55 advantage at the 3:22 mark after Makai Ashton-Langford (Worcester, Mass.) hoisted up a deep three with the shot clock winding down, Young picked up the short rebound and finished the layup to give Providence a six-point lead.
Providence forced four turnovers in the final four minutes, on top of holding the Pirates to 0-4 shooting and a 4:29 scoring drought. The Friars held Seton Hall to just nine field goals in the second half. The Friars clinched the game with free throws to give them their first BIG EAST win.
Quincy McKnight paced the Pirates with 16 points, three rebounds and four assists.
