Friars open BIG EAST Conference action against No. 21 Old Dominion on Sept. 14.

DURHAM, N.H. - The Providence College field hockey team displayed a solid effort, but was defeated by 14th-ranked Iowa, 1-0, on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Memorial Field in Durham, N.H.  It marked the Friars' first match-up of the season against a nationally-ranked opponent and the loss halted a three-game win streak for Providence.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS & NOTES

- The match entered halftime in a scoreless draw (0-0).  Through the first 35 minutes of action, Iowa led in shots (6-0) and penalty corners (1-0).

- Just one of Iowa's shots were on target, but was turned away by senior goalkeeper Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.). 

- Iowa took a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute as Makenna Grewe tallied her third goal of the season.

- The Hawkeyes held on through the second half to maintain its lead and take the 1-0 win.

- Iowa entered the weekend averaging 4.00 goals per game, scoring 16 goals in its previous four games.

- The Friars' defense was solid during the game.  The squad yielded 12 shots overall, but only gave up three shots on target.

The Friars open BIG EAST Conference action on Sept. 14 against No. 21 Old Dominion.  The match will be played in Norfolk, Va. and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.  Providence returns home for its second game of the season at Lennon Family Field on Sunday, Sept. 16 against LIU Brooklyn.  The game will begin at 1:00 p.m. and serves as the program's annual Alumni Day.
