Providence Men’s and Women’s Cross-Country Competes At Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational

The women finished 20th and the men finished 33rd in their respective races.

MADISON, WIS. – The Providence College men's and women's cross-teams competed against nationally and regionally ranked teams at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational today (Sept. 28). The men placed 33rd, while the women placed 20th.
 
For the women's 5k race, junior Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) finished first for Friars in the competitive field. With such a deep field, Wheeler got out well and positioned herself within the lead group. Wheeler went out in the top-40 and maintained her position through the 6k race.  She finished in 37th place in a time of 20:30.8. Wheeler improved from last year at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitation, where she placed 67thin a time of 20:56.3. Wheeler looks to continue to improve and be a contender for the BIG EAST Individual title. 
 
Sophomore Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) was the second Friar to cross the line in 74thplace (20:59.5). Coffin also made improvements from last year's Nuttycombe race, where she placed 114th(21:25.6).  
 
Graduate students Regan Rome (Dalla, Pa.) and Tessa Barret (Waverly, Pa.)  placed 112thand 162nd, respectively. Each look to improve upon their performances at the BIG EAST Championships. 
 
On the men's side, senior Austin Scola (Medfield, Mass.) was the first Friar to cross the line in 24:55.4. Scola placed 159thon the day, improving from his 225thplace finish last year at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.
 
Junior Liam Harris (Douglas, County Cork, Ireland) and sophomore David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) would finish within a second of each other as they took 167th(25:02.0) and 169th (25:03.3) place, respectively.
 
"The women were much improved from Beantown and we are looking forward to the next few weeks, in preparation for the BIG EAST Championships" said coach Ray Treacy. "The men have sickness going through the team that we need to get past".  
 
The Friars will return to racing on Friday, October 19that the CCSU Mini Meet in New Britain, Conn.
