PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College volleyball team is set to take on Xavier and Butler in the second week of BIG EAST match ups. The Friars will start the weekend with a match against the Musketeers on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7:00 p.m. (ET) in Cincinnati, Ohio. The match will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network via Fox Sports Go. Providence will then finish weekend play with a match against the Bulldogs on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 6:00 p.m. (ET) in Indianapolis, Ind.
SCOUTING THE FRIARS: The Providence College Friars have started conference play, 1-1, with an overall record of 7-6. The Friars record ranks them third in the BIG EAST, along with Marquette, Villanova, Butler and Xavier. Providence most recently faced BIG EAST rivals No. 21 Marquette and DePaul last weekend (Sept. 21-23). The Friars fell to the ranked Golden Eagles in straight sets on Friday, Sept. 21, but rallied back on Sunday, Sept. 23 to take the 3-2 victory over DePaul. Providence is looking to claim two more BIG EAST victories on the road this weekend.
Providence has three different players with at least 100 kills. Senior
Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) leads the Friar attack this season. Impellizeri has a total of 159, kills ranking her sixth in the conference and her 3.38 kills per set ranks second in the BIG EAST. Against DePaul, Impellizeri set a new career high in kills (18) to top her previous record of 16.
Juniors
Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) and
Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) have also added at least 100 kills to the Friars' attack by tallying 123 and 113 kills, respectively.
Lindsey Schaible (Tampa, Fla.) leads the Friars in service aces, with 13, while
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) is not far behind, with 10.
Barber has been the setter for the Friars this season with 469 total assists. Barber's 9.98 assists per set average ranks her second in the BIG EAST.
Freshmen
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.), the Friars' defensive specialist, has been a key player for the Friars this season. Taylor leads Providence in digs, recording 215, and her 4.57 digs per set ranks fifth in the BIG EAST. Taylor is the only freshman ranked in the top-five for digs. She has also added 35 assists for the Friars.
Contributing to the Providence defense are Barber, Alderson and Root with each recording 103, 96 and 83 digs, respectively. Impellizeri and Schaible are strong forces on the front line, totaling 43 and 35 blocks apiece.
SCOUTING THE MUSKETEERS: The Xavier Musketeers have an overall record of 3-10 and are 1-1 in the BIG EAST this season. They last played against St. Johns and Seton Hall on Sept. 21-22. The Musketeers went 1-1 that weekend.
Laura Grossman has been the offensive threat for the Musketeers recording 136 kills. Audrey Adams, Norah Painter and Moriah Hopkins have contributed to the Musketeers' attack with 87, 77 and 76 kills, respectively. Adams .324 hitting percentage ranks fifth in the BIG EAST.
Grossman has also recorded eight service aces to lead Xavier, thus far, this season.
McKena Estes and Nadia Dieudonne have been the Musketeers' setters. Estes has totaled 251 assists and her 5.46 assists per set average ranks 10
thin the BIG EAST. Dieudonne is not far behind with 220 assists.
Meredith Kutruff and Grossman have led the defense for the Musketeers. Kutruff has a total of 178 digs on the season and her 3.87 dig per set average ranks eighth in the BIG EAST. Grossman has also contributed to Xavier's defense with 127 digs. On the defensive front line, Jayda Carlton leads the Musketeers in blocks (49) and ranks third in the BIG EAST.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS:The Butler Bulldogs have an overall record of 4-10 and are 1-1 in the BIG EAST this season. The Bulldogs last played against St. Johns and Seton Hall on Sept. 21-22. The Bulldogs went 1-1 that weekend.
Brooke Gregory and Bri Lilly have led the Bulldogs offense with 137 kills apiece. Lilly's .288 hitting percentage ranks ninth in the BIG EAST. Contributing to Butler's attack is Nataline Ravenell, with 130 kills.
Megan Ramseyer and Maddie Freiwald have been the setters for the Bulldogs this season. Ramseyer has recorded 247 assists, while Dolan not far behind with 211 assists. They are ranked sixth and seventh in the BIG EAST for total assists.
The Bulldogs have a well-balanced defense with all three libero's recording over 100 digs each. Elizabeth Labue leads Butler's defense with 175 digs and her 3.57 dig per set average ranks 10
thin the BIG EAST. Not far behind are defensive specialists Emma Milstead and Taylor Takeda with 107 and 105 digs, respectively.
Lilly and Melody Davidson have been a threat on the front line for the Bulldogs. Lilly and Davidson have tallied 73 and 60 blocks ranking them one and two in the BIG EAST.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will return to Alumni Hall to host St. Johns on Oct. 5 and Seton Hall on Oct. 7.
