Men’s Soccer Falls to DePaul in Double Overtime

Tiago Mendonca scored his fourth goal of the season in the 52nd minute.

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Providence College men's soccer team opened BIG EAST play with a 2-1, double-overtime, loss at DePaul University on Friday, Sept. 14.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
- DePaul got on the board just 4:42 into the game. Istvan Wilhelms collected a through ball and dribbled around Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.), who came off his line to meet him. Miller got a hand to the ball, but Wilhelms maintained possession and slotted the ball into the net.
- With only a few minutes remaining in the first half, Klisman Sousa (Sal, Cape Verde) had a chance in front. His header off a corner kick was cleared off the line by a Blue Demons' defender.
- Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) leveled the score in the 52nd minute (1-1), with his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.) took an initial shot that was blocked by a defender. Mendonca then one-timed the loose ball past Drew Nuelle.
- Wilhelms notched his second goal of the day in the 108th minute. Jake Fuderer played a long ball into the box that Jack Richards knocked down to Wilhelms' feet. He was able to slip it past Miller for the golden goal.
- Providence outshot DePaul, 13-8, however the Blue Demons had the edge in shots on goal, 6-1.
- Miller made four saves in net for the Friars, while Nuelle did not make a save for DePaul.
