Volleyball Claims 14th Annual Friar Volleyball Classic

The Friars defeated Brown 3-1 in the final game to post a 3-0 record in the tournament.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College volleyball defeated Brown in the final match of the 14thAnnual Friar Classic, 3-1, on Sept. 1. With the victory the Friars claimed the tournament title and improved their record to 4-2.
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: 
  • The Friars dropped the first set to the Bears 25-22 after a back and forth battle throughout.
 
  • Providence tallied four total team blocks in the first set.
 
  • Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) led the Friars' attack with four kills, hitting a positive .667 percent.
 
  • Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) led the Friars in assists (eight), while Kara Mason (Boca Raton, Fla.) led in digs (five).
 
  • Lindsey Schaible (Tampa, Fla.) recorded a total of three block assists in the first set.
 
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Providence went on a 9-0 scoring run to rally back in the set two and take a 25-23 victory.
 
  • The Friars were down by seven, 23-16, before they came back to win the set. 
 
  • The Friars held the Bears to a .098 hitting percentage.
 
  • Barber served the last eight points to win the second set.
 
  • Impellizeri and Schaible lead the Providence attack with three kills, while Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.), Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) and Barber all had 2 kills respectively. 
 
  • Barber also contributed to the Friars attack with 10 assists.
 
  • Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) helped defensively leading the Friars in digs (six).
 
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The Friars went on a 9-3 run late in set three to win, 25-23.
 
  • Schaible and Root led the Friars' offense with six and five kills, respectively.
 
  • Barber contributing to the Friars attack with 17 assists.
 
  • Taylor and Root lead Providence in digs was nine and six apiece. 
 
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: 
  • The Friars won the fourth set 29-27 after battling back late.
 
  • Providence recorded three team blocks.
 
  • Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) lead the Friars' attack in the fourth set with seven kills.
 
  • Barber tallied 14 assists in the last set to help the Friar offense.
 
  • Freshman Mackenzie Taylor again lead Providence in digs (six) in the fourth set.
 
 
MATCH NOTES:
  • As a team, Providence recorded 58 kills, 54 assists, 77 digs and 10 total team blocks.  
 
  • The Friars had four players with double-digit kills with Alderson (10), Root (14), Impellizeri (12) and Schaible (14).
 
  • Root recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs. 
 
  • Barber tallied a total of 49 assists to lead all players in the match.
 
  • Providence had four players with double-digit digs with Taylor recording 24, Mason recording 10, Barber 13 and Root 12.
 
  • Providence's Barber received the MVP for the 14thAnnual Friar Classic Tournament.
 
  • Alongside Barber, teammates Schaible and Impellizeri earned All-Tournament Team honors.
 
  • Brown's Sabrina Stillwell and Kristin Sellers also were named to the All-Tournament Team, in addition to Lindsey Viscardis and Mailia Randolph from UMass Lowell and Erika Sullivan from Fairleigh Dickinson. 
 
WHAT'S NEXT: The Providence College volleyball team will travel to Kansas City, Mo. for the Kangaroo Classic on Sept. 7-8.  The Friars will play a total of four teams, SIUE, Arkansas State, Southeast Missouri State and UMKC. Providence's first match of the tournament will be against SIUE on Sept. 7 at 12:00 P.M.
