PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College volleyball defeated UMass Lowell in four sets on the first day of the 14
thAnnual Friar Classic (Aug. 31). With the victory the Friars improve their record to 2-2.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Friars were down 18-14 in the first set before going on a 12-6 run to close the set for a 26-24 victory.
- The Friars held the Riverhawks to a .088 hitting percentage in the set.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence was tied 10-10 during set two but UMass Lowell rallied to win the set 25-18.
- Barber and Daneliak were two for two on the attack.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Friars went on a 7-2 run late in the third set to win the set 25-21.
- Alderson lead the Friars in kills (four), while Barber lead in assists (11).
- Providence had four total team blocks in the third set.
- Root, Impellizeri and Schaible each had two block assists.
- Barber lead the Friars in digs (11).
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Friars claimed the match with a 25-18 victory in the fourth set.
- Providence held UMass Lowell to a -.024 hitting percentage and had three total team blocks.
- Schaible lead the Friars in kills in the fourth set (three).
- Barber again lead in assists (eight).
- Taylor tallied four digs, while Onyundo and Kara Mason (Boca Raton, Fla.) added three digs each in the fourth set.
MATCH NOTES:
- The Friars had two players with double digit kills with Alderson (11) and Impellizeri (10).
- Barber tallied a total of 44 assists to lead all players in the match.
- Providence had two players with double digit digs with Taylor recording 14 and Onyundo recording 13.
- Impellizeri totaled five block assists in the victory.
WHAT'S NEXT: Providence will return to action for the final day of the 14
thAnnual Friar Volleyball Classic on Saturday, Sept. 1. The Friars will face Fairleigh Dickinson at 10:30 a.m., followed by a match-up against Brown at 5:30 p.m.
