PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams will make their season debuts on Saturday (Sept. 1) at the UNH Dual Meet in Durham, N.H. The Friars will be competing against the University of New Hampshire Wildcats and the Holy Cross Crusaders. Last season, both the men and women took home the victories, with the men scoring 19 points and the women scoring 17 points. The men enter the race ranked No. 4 in the Northeast Regional Poll, while the women are ranked No. 1 in the Northeast Regional Poll and No. 11 in the National Poll.
Junior
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) will lead the way for the women on Saturday over the 5km course. Last cross-country season, Wheeler placed 10
that the BIG EAST Championship, to earn All-BIG EAST First Team honors. Wheeler then carried her form into the outdoor track season, qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 5,000 meters. The junior finished 19
th(16:06.69) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, to earn Honorable Mention All-America honors. During her breakthrough outdoor season, Wheeler also recorded a personal best in the 5,000 meters (15:57.18) at Raleigh Relays on March 30-31.
Fifth-year graduate students,
Regan Rome (Dalla, Pa.) and Tessa Barret (Waverly, Pa.), will make their Providence cross country career debuts. Rome, a transfer from William & Mary, finished 25
that the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2015, to earn All-America honors. She also earned four All-America honors in indoor and outdoor track. Barrett, a transfer from Penn State, finished 38
that the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2015, also earning her All-America honors. Barret has also earned three All-America honors in indoor and outdoor track. Both women look to contribute their experience to the Friars this season.
Sophomore
Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.), junior
Alex DeCicco (Sachem, N.Y.) and senior
Dara Cuffe (Cornwall, N.Y.) also will step up to the line. Coffin, DeCicco and Cuffe all ran in the top eight throughout the 2017 cross country season and were members of the BIG EAST Runner-Up team. Coffin had a respectable outdoor track season and hopes to carry that into the upcoming cross-country season. Coffin recorded a personal best in the 5,000 meters (16:44.40) at Penn Relays on April 26 and qualified for the USATF Junior National Championships on June 16, where she placed fifth (17:09.7).
Sophomore
Hanna Johnston (Thunder Bay, Ontario), who red-shirted last cross-country season and freshman
Hannah McReavy (Colorado Springs, Colo.) will also make their Providence debuts. Both women will help the Friars in the upcoming season.
On the men's side, seniors
Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) and
Austin Scola (Medfield, Mass.), as well as, junior
Liam Harris (Cork County, Ireland) will lead the Friars. Carleo improved on the track last year, running a personal best in the 1,500 meters (3:45.20), qualifying for the First Round of the NCAA Championships on May 24. Carleo made the final of the 1,500 meters and placed 11
thin his heat. He also ran a personal best in the mile (4:02.33) at the Adrian Martinez Classis on June 1. Scola was a member of the top eight throughout the 2017 cross country season. He finished 27
that the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 28. Harris looks to defend his title at the UNH Dual Meet this Saturday, winning in a time of 15:22.31 last year. Last season, Harris was also a member of the top eight and ran at the BIG EAST Championships. He placed 18
th, to earn All-BIG EAST Second Team honors. On the track, Harris ran personal bests in the 5,000 meters (14:18.17) and 3,000-meter Steeplechase (9:10.87). At the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, Harris placed second in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase and fifth in the 5,000 meters on May 11-12.
Joining the upperclassmen this season will be a strong group of sophomores and freshmen. The underclassmen look to contribute to the Friars this upcoming season.
