Men’s Soccer Opens 2018 at SMU Tournament

The Friars take on Southern Methodist University and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team travels to Southern Methodist University to kick off the 2018 season. The Friars take on SMU (Aug. 24) and the University of Illinois at Chicago (Aug. 26). Friday's kick-off is set for 8:30 p.m. (ET) and Sunday's will be 11:00 a.m. (ET).

Scouting the Mustangs
Southern Methodist enters the season at No. 8 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason National Rankings. Last year, the Mustangs reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and collected the American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles. SMU compiled a 17-3-1 record last year, including a 13-0-0 mark at home. Junior forward Garrett McLaughlin, who just picked up AAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year honors returns for the Mustangs. He led the league in scoring last year, with 14 goals and 31 points. Senior Emil Cuello joined McLaughlin on the Preseason All-Conference Team. He scored two goals and had five assists for nine points in 2017. The Mustangs graduated starting goalkeeper Michael Nelson who played 21 games, giving up just 13 goals. He backstopped the team with 68 saves and 10 shutouts.
 
Scouting the Flames
UIC captured its second straight Horizon League Championship in the 2017 season. The Flames then fell to Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament to conclude the season with an 11-6-3 overall record. Last year's leading scorer Oscar Gonzalez returns to the pitch for his senior season. He had six goals and six assists for 18 points last year. Junior Jesus Perez also had 18 points last season on five goals and eight assists. Senior Sawyer Jackman returns for the Flames in net. He played 17 games last season, held a 1.10 goals against average and posted a .767 save percentage. He posted five shutouts and a 10-4-3 record.
 
Scouting the Friars
The Friars concluded the 2017 season with a 5-8-5 overall record and a 2-2-5 mark in BIG EAST play. Of the 13 players to record a point last season, 10 return to the pitch this season. The team's top returning scorers are Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal), Matt DePerro (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.). Serrano tallied eight points on two goals and four assists. DePerro had three goals and an assist for seven points, while Griffin notched five points and two goals and an assist. In net, the Friars return one of the league's best goalkeeper's in redshirt senior Colin Miller (Bel Air, Md.). He played 16 games and compiled a 1.08 goals against average. Additionally, he recorded five shutouts and a .762 save percentage.
 
Preseason Poll and Awards
Colin Miller was unanimously voted the BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year entering the season. He also earned a spot on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Teammate Danny Griffin joined Miller on the twelve-man squad.
 
In the coaches poll, the Friars were picked to finish tied for fourth in the conference standings. Georgetown, the reigning tournament champion, was picked to finish first with seven first place votes (79 points). Butler, which finished first in regular season play last season, was picked second and received three first place votes (73 points). Xavier (60 points), Creighton (54 points) and Providence (54 points) round out the top half of the standings. Marquette (37 points), St. John's (33 points), Villanova (31 points), Seton Hall (20 points) and DePaul (9 points) filled out the rest of the table.
 
The Friars' Newcomers
The Friars' roster features ten newcomers for the 2018 season. Andualem Chisholm (Attleboro, Mass.), Dylan Curran (Boston, Mass.), Giovani Jimenez (Turnersville, N.J.), Paulo Lima (Lisbon, Portugal), Rimi Olatunji (Brampton, Ontario), Raimondo Partito (Philadelphia, Pa.), Ramzi Qawasmy (Landsdale, Pa.). Chris Roman (Glastonbury, Conn.), Gil Santos (Parede, Portugal) and Kevin Vang (Cranston, R.I.) round out the incoming class.

The Friars' home opener is set for August 31 at 7:00 p.m. Providence faces off against Boston College on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
