Incoming Freshman Jay O'Brien Selected in the First Round of the NHL Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers

The incoming freshman was the fourth first-round selection in program history.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Incoming Providence College freshman Jay O'Brien (Hingham, Mass.) was selected 19th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft held on Friday (June 22) at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. O'Brien is the fourth member of the program all-time to be selected in the first round and the eighth member selected by the Philadelphia Flyers.
O'Brien earned the All-USA Hockey Player of the Year given to the top high school player in the United States after posting 43 goals and 37 assists in 30 games at Thayer Academy in 2017-18. He also was the recipient of the Boston Bruins' John Carlton Memorial Award as the most outstanding high school or junior hockey player in Eastern Massachusetts. O'Brien finished ranked 32nd among North American skaters in the NHL Central Scouting's final rankings leading up to this weekend's draft. The Hingham, Massachusetts native also participated in the 2017 CCM All-American Prospects Game and most recently, the NHL Combine in Buffalo, New York. He is also slated to participate in the 2018 World Junior Summer Showcase held from July 28-Aug. 4 in Kamloops, British Columbia.
