PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
The Providence College men's basketball team dropped their first BIG EAST conference game of the season on Monday, Dec. 31 after falling to the Creighton Bluejays, 79-68 in the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Friars dropped to 10-4 overall on the season while the Bluejays improved to 10-4. This game marked the third time in the last six years that the Friars and Bluejays have played on New Year's Eve. The Friars were previously 1-1 versus Creighton on New Year's Eve before dropping today's matchup.

Both sides locked in on defense in the opening minutes, the Friars and Bluejays combined to shoot 0-6 from the floor before Davion Mintz scored the first points of the contest for Creighton at the 17:34 mark. Each team started the game 1-6 from the field with Providence holding a 5-2 lead with 15:30 remaining in the first half.

Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) brought the game even at 13 with 10:26 remaining. He scored a layup in the paint before hitting a jumper the following possession. Jimmy Nichols Jr. (Conway, S.C.) led Providence into the second media timeout by blocking Kaleb Joseph's three-point attempt into the stands.

White finished with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists in his fourth-consecutive start in the place of the injured A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.).

Makai Ashton-Langford (Worcester, Mass.) hit Providence's first trifecta of the afternoon with 7:07 remaining in the first half. He finished with a team-high two threes on the afternoon alongside David Duke's (Providence, R.I.) two second half three-pointers. Providence led 22-19 with 6:33 remaining in the half.

Creighton used their second 8-0 run of the half to push their lead to 27-22 as Providence struggled through a 3:27 scoring draught.

Despite Creighton coming into the contest as the third-best three-point shooting team in the country, Providence held them to just 4-14 (28.6 percent) in the first half.

White brought the Dunkin' Donuts Center to it's feet after Isaiah Jackson (Gainesville, Fla.) stole a pass in the paint before pushing it up to White for an emphatic dunk. The dunk cut the lead to one before the Bluejays scored a basket in the key to give them a 34-31 lead heading into the half.

Duke notched the game at 38 with a wing three at the 17:03 mark. He finished with 9 points in the second half and 11 in the game. Duke also added four rebounds and two blocks.

Diallo continued to get to the line all afternoon, he gave Providence their first lead of the second half after knocking down one of two free throws the following possession. Diallo shot 9-13 from the charity stripe in the game while the rest of the Providence only got to the line seven times.

Diallo contributed to the back-and-forth second half by giving Providence another one-point lead. Diallo received a pass from Ashton-Langford in the corner before hitting the three while getting fouled. He finished the four-point play to give the Providence a 53-52 lead. Diallo finished with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Creighton jumped to a 64-56 lead with 7:24 left in the game, due in part to their three-point shooting. The Bluejays three-point scores accounted for 49 percent of their total points. They shot 9-15 from deep in the second half compared to just 4-14 in the first half.
