PROVIDENCE, R.I.– Providence College freshman field hockey player
Amanda Collins (San Diego, Calif.) was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Oct. 8. It marks her first weekly conference honor as a Friar.
Collins scored her first career goal in a 2-1 victory over Fairfield on Sunday, Oct. 7. The goal came on Collins' only shot attempt of the game, leveling the score in the first half (1-1). Providence went on to win the game, 2-1.
On Friday, Oct. 5, Collins was part of a defensive effort that held defending national champ UConn scoreless in the second half of play. Only four other teams this season have managed to keep the Huskies scoreless in a single half of play (Stanford, Michigan, Maryland and Princeton). Entering the game, Connecticut led the nation in goals per game (4.73), assists (4.64) and points per game (14.09). The Huskies also ranked second in the nation in scoring margin (+3.55).
Providence is currently 8-6 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Friars will return to action on Friday, Oct. 12 against league-foe Quinnipiac. Providence College is in a three-way tie for third place in the BIG EAST standings with Georgetown and Villanova. The game against the Bobcats will be played in Hamden, Conn. and is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. Providence returns home to host Lafayette on Sunday, Oct. 14 at Lennon Family Field. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
