Men’s and Women’s Cross-Country Competes At The BIG EAST Championships

The women finished third and the men finished fifth in their respective races.

CARMEL, IND. – The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams competed at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 26. The women finished third as a team, while the men finished fifth. 
 
For the women's 6k race, junior Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) finished first for Friars in the competitive field. Wheeler got out well and positioned herself within the lead group. Wheeler went out in the top six and moved through the field as the race progressed.  She ran a strong last 2,000 meters to place fourth overall in a time of 20:35.3, earning All-BIG EAST honors. Wheeler improved from last year at the BIG EAST Championships, where she placed 10th. Wheeler looks to continue to improve and be a contender at the NCAA Northeast Regional Meet in two weeks.
 
Graduate students Regan Rome (Dalla, Pa.) and Tessa Barrett (Waverly, Pa.) also crossed the line in the top-20 at the BIG EAST Championships. Rome was the second Friar to cross the line in 11thplace. Barrett had a breakthrough performance and was the third Friar across the line in 14thplace. Rome and Barrett both earned All-BIG EAST honors for their top-20 finishes. Each look to improve upon their performances at the regional meet.
 
Rounding out the Friar top-five was sophomore Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) and junior Alex DeCicco (Sachem, N.Y.). Coffin and DeCicco placed 24thand 27th, respectively.
 
The Providence women finished the race with a total of 76 points.
 
On the men's side, sophomore Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) was the first Friar to cross the line in 25:15.8. Gallagher ran in the top-20 throughout the race and ran a strong last 1,000 meters. He placed 18thon the day, earning All-BIG EAST honors. 
 
Senior Austin Scola (Medfield, Mass.) and graduate student Michael Wyman (Marion, Mass.) would finish within four seconds of each other as they took 23rd(25:27.3) and 25th(25:31.1) place, respectively. Scola improved from last year at the BIG EAST Championships, where he placed 27th
 
Rounding out the Friar top-five were sophomores Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) and David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.). White and Rosas placed 27thand 30th, respectively.
 
The Providence men finished the race with a total of 117 points. 
 
The Friars will return to action on Friday, November 9that the NCAA Northeast Regional Meet in Buffalo, N.Y.
