Men’s Soccer Hosts Villanova for Senior Day

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team hosts Villanova for a BIG EAST matchup on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 1:00 p.m. The program will celebrate the senior class prior to kick-off.

Scouting the Wildcats
Villanova enters the match with a 6-7-2 record and a 1-5-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Wildcats currently sit in last place in the conference, but are not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Most recently, (Oct. 24) Villanova snapped a four-game losing streak and battled to a 1-1 draw with St. John's. The Wildcats' lone conference win came on Sept. 29 at home against DePaul (1-0). Villanova has struggled on the road this season, posting a 1-5-1 record away from Higgins Soccer Complex.
 
Senior Zach Zandi leads Villanova offensively with 15 points on six goals and three assists. Yusuf Cueceoglu is tied for the team-lead in goals (six) and has one assist. He scored the game-tying goal on Wednesday against St. John's. Zandi and Cueceoglu are the only players on the team to have scored more than one goal this season. Defender Enda O'Neill is tied with Zandi for the team lead in assists (three). Sophomore Carson Williams has started all 15 games in net. He holds a 1.29 goals against average and a .771 save percentage.
 
Scouting the Friars
Providence is 7-6-2 overall and 4-2-1 in BIG EAST play. The Friars currently sit in third place in league standings. Providence most recently fell to No. 24 Georgetown, 2-1 (Oct. 24). Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.) scored in the fourth minute on the Friars' lone shot on goal of the game. Georgetown converted in the 70th and 89th minutes to prevail. Colin Miller (Beli Air, Md.) made five saves in net in the loss.
 
Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) leads the Friars in points (eight) and goals (four). Gil Santos (Parede, Portugal) is close behind with seven points on three goals and an assist. Fellow freshman Andualem Chisholm (Attleboro, Mass.) has two goals, an assist and five points. Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) also has five points (one goal, three assists). In net, Miller holds a 1.08 goals against average and a .721 save percentage. He's started all 15 games and has six shutouts.
 
Playoff Picture
Despite the loss to Georgetown, Providence clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament. It will be the sixth-straight season that the Friars have qualified. No team is mathematically eliminated from the field, while Creighton, Georgetown and Providence are all in.
 
Shutout Streak Snapped
Providence's BIG EAST shutout streak was snapped after 463:59 minutes of holding league opponents scoreless. The Friars compiled four-straight league shutouts, before Georgetown got on the board in the 70th minute of the fifth game.
 
One-Goal Games
Through 15 games, ten of the Friars' contests have been decided by just one goal. Six of those ten have been wins.
 
Free Soccer
Providence has played five overtime games so far this season. All five have reached the second overtime period, with only two ending in a draw. The Friars hold a 2-1-2 overtime record this season, with extra time wins at SMU and Seton Hall.
 
Friars Versus Ranked Opponents
Providence has picked up victories over two top-25 opponents so far this season. The Friars defeated then-No. 8 SMU in double overtime, 2-1 (Aug. 24). Providence also took down then-No. 22 Xavier by a score of 2-0 (Sept. 29). Most recently, the Friars battled to a 0-0 tie at No. 8 Creighton (Oct. 20) and fell to No. 24 Georgetown, 2-1 (Oct. 24).
 
Stacking Up Against the BIG EAST
Providence is currently third in the BIG EAST in shutouts (six) and goals against average (1.07).
The Friars are fourth in shots (195) and fifth in corner kicks per game (5.60).
 
In terms of individuals, Santos is tied for fifth in game-winning goals (two). In conference games only, Santos is second in points per game (1.17) and tied for third in goals per game (0.50). Miller is tied for first in BIG EAST shutouts (four) and ranked second in league-play goals against average (0.79).
 
Freshmen Impact
The Friars' roster features ten newcomers for the 2018 season. Six of the ten have seen action for the Friars. Ramzi Qawasmy (Landsdale, Pa.) has started all 15 games at center back, totaling 1,419 minutes on the season. Chisholm has made six starts and 12 total appearances. He was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after a three-point weekend (Sept. 10).
 
Santos has come alive in league play, making six of his eight appearances in BIG EAST games. He's scored three goals and added one assist. He is second in the BIG EAST in points per game in conference play (1.17) and is tied for third in goals in conference play (three).
 
Kevin Vang (Cranston, R.I.), Raimondo Partito (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Christopher Roman (Glastonbury, Conn.) are the other Friars who have seen time on the pitch. Vang has made six starts in 13 appearances, while Partito and Roman have each come off the bench.
