NEW BRITAIN, CONN. -The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams both captured their second wins of the season today (Oct. 19). The men recorded a total of 29 points, while the women finished two through four and had five in the top ten to win the meet with 20 points.
For the women's 3km race, junior
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) and unattached fifth year
Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Western Australia) separated themselves from the rest of the field right from the start. As the race progressed, the women continued to separate themselves from the pack and never looked back. With about 800 meters to go Ilarda broke away crossing the finish line first in a time of 9:42.3, while Wheeler finished in a comfortable second in a time of 9:48.9.
Not far behind Ilarda and Wheeler was graduate student
Regan Rome (Dalla, Pa.) and sophomore
Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.). Rome placed third overall and was the second Friar to cross the finish line in 10:07.5. Coffin finished right behind Rome in fourth and was the third Friar to cross the line in 10:08.5
Junior
Alex DeCicco (Sachem, N.Y.) had a breakthrough performance finishing sixth overall and was fourth for the Friars in 10:15.0. Graduate student
Tessa Barrett (Waverly, Pa.) crossed the line in in 10
th(10:21.2) to round out the top-five, respectively.
The Friars put five in the top-10 to win the meet with 20 points.
On the men's side, the Friars made their presence known immediately from the start. Right off the line, a strong group of Providence men created the lead pack, made up of sophomores Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y), Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand), David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.), Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.), senior Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) and junior Peter Rindfuss (Hamburg, N.Y.).
Gallagher, White, and Karamanolis broke from the field at the half way mark with Gallagher doing most of the leading in the chase pack. As the men started the third loop for the final time, Gallagher created a gap from White and Karamanolis.
Gallagher, running a great last 1,000 meters finished second overall in 14:52.6. He was the first Friar to cross the line. White was the next Friar across the line in third place, just four seconds behind Gallagher (14:57.6), while Karamanolis finished immediately behind to take fourth (14:58.5).
Rounding out the top-five for the men was Rosas in 10
th(15:06.4) and senior Austin Scola (Medfield, Mass.) in 14
th(15:16.9).
The Friars placed four in the top-10 to win the meet with 29 points.
In the men's junior varsity (JV) race, freshman Sean Meehan (Greenwich, R.I.) took the win for Friars in a time of 15:33.2. Sophomore Jack Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) was right behind Meehan to finish second in 15:34.1.

Alex DeCicco who had her best race in a Providence College singlet." said head coach
Ray Treacyabout the women's varsity race. "This will help us going into the BIG EAST Championships next weekend."
"It was the best race for the guys this season." said Treacy about the men's varsity race. " We have had only two guys in the past go under 15 minutes on this course and today we had three. This race was a good indicator for the men next week."
The Friars will be back in action on Saturday, October 27
