Field Hockey Clinches BIG EAST Tournament Berth With Victory At Georgetown

The Friars defeated the Hoyas in a shootout, 2-1.

WASHINGTON, D.C.– The Providence College field hockey team defeated Georgetown, 2-1, in a shootout on Friday, Oct. 19 in Washington, D.C.  The game was deadlocked, 1-1, after regulation and two scoreless overtime periods. However, the Friars used a 3-0 advantage in the shootout to claim the victory.  Providence College also clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Field Hockey Tournament with its victory, as the program improved to 4-2 in league play. The Friars join Connecticut and Liberty in the field, and the fourth and final spot remains up for grabs.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS & NOTES
- The Friars led the Hoyas in shots (3-1), shots on goal (2-1) and penalty corners (3-1) after the opening 35 minutes of play.
- Providence got on the board for a 1-0 lead with just 1:05 left in the first half, as Mary O'Reilly connected on her fourth goal of the season.
- The Friars maintained their lead until late in regulation as Georgetown's Sam Hickey connected for her first goal of the season at 61:16. The goal would eventually force overtime.
- After two scoreless overtimes, the game was decided in a shootout. 
- Providence took the victory with a 3-0 advantage in the shootout. Sophomore Maddie Babineau (Milton, Ontario) scored on the Friars' first attempt.  Freshman Amanda Collins (San Diego, Calif.) and Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) also were successful on their attempts, while senior goalkeeper Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) denied each of the Hoyas' chances on cage.
