Lydia Rice And Mikayla Michals Earn BIG EAST Recognition

Rice was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while Michals earned Weekly Honor Roll status.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– Providence College field hockey player Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while teammate Mikayla Michals (Needham, Mass.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.  The league announced its weekly awards on Oct. 15.
 
Rice earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for a second time this season, having previously earned the honor on Oct. 1.  Earlier this year she was named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (Sept. 10).  Last week, Rice led the Friars to victories over league-foe Quinnipiac (6-2) and non-conference opponent Lafayette (2-0). She collected four saves against the Bobcats, and closed the week with a six-save performance against Lafayette to earn her fifth shut-out victory of the season.
 
Michals, a unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST selection at the start of the year, earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll accolades for the first time this season and second time in her career. She notched four points last week on one goal and two assists. Her two assists came in a critical BIG EAST victory over Quinnipiac (6-2).  She was credited with the assist on the eventual game-winning goal in the 44thminute of play.  In the 2-0 victory over Lafayette, she tallied an insurance goal for the Friars in the 65thminute. 
 
Providence College returns to action on Friday, Oct. 19 against conference-foe Georgetown.  The game will be played in Washington, D.C. and is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
