PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to No. 1-ranked Connecticut, 2-0, on Friday, Sept. 30 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars' game plan held the top-scoring team in the nation to just one field goal in the match, while yielding another on a penalty stroke.
In the first half, the Friars and Huskies were evenly matched. The lone goal of the half came with 3:33 remaining on the clock as Connecticut was awarded a penalty stroke. Casey Umstead converted the attempt as she flicked the ball into the upper, left of the cage. The Huskies held a 5-3 advantage in shots in the opening 35 minutes, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
The second half also proved to be evenly match from a statistical perspective, until Connecticut managed to tack on an insurance goal in the 62nd minute. Charlotte Veitner sent a ball from the right side across the mouth of the cage, where Svea Boker deflected the ball into the net at the left post.
The teams were even in overall shot attempts, 8-8, and both teams registered five shots on goal. Connecticut held a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Junior goalkeeper Megan Guilbert (Morganville, N.J.) collected three saves for the Friars, while Nina Klein registered five stops for UConn.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, Oct. 2 against Fairfield. The game will be played at 1:00 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn.
