FAIRFIELD, CONN. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated non-conference foe Fairfield, 3-2, on Oct. 2 at University Field in Fairfield, Conn. The Friars improved to 9-3 overall and will resume BIG EAST Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 8 against Quinnipiac.

Fairfield struck first in Saturday's match as Kaley McMullen deflected a ball into the cage during the 13th minute off a feed from Jaclyn Gallagher.

The Friars evened the score, 1-1, in the 21st minute as junior defender Abby Thornton (West Pittston, Pa.) converted a direct shot on a penalty corner, assisted by senior Emily Humiston (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore Natalie Mitchell (East Norriton, Pa.). The goal marked Thornton's first tally of the season, and the two teams went into halftime knotted in a 1-1 tie.

The Friars took a 2-1 lead in the 40th minute as freshman Sylvia Miller (Severn, Md.) knocked in her fourth goal of the season, assisted by junior Megan Hamilton (Warrington, Pa.).

Fairfield would not go away quietly, scoring an equalizer in the 44th minute to make it a 2-2 contest. Hannah Pike was credited with the goal and was assisted by Julie de Paeuw.

In the 62nd minute, freshman Kara Sanford (Hazleton, Pa.) cashed in for her first career goal with the Friars as she one-timed a feed from Mitchell at the left post. Sanford's goal proved to be the game-winner.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Guilbert (Morganville, N.J.) recorded five saves for Providence, and Hamilton contributed one defensive save in the second half to help secure the win. Caitlin Gilligan collected 10 saves for Fairfield.

Overall, the Friars held a 17-10 edge in shots, including a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal. Providence also earned seven penalty corners, compared to Fairfield's four.

Providence moves on to face BIG EAST foe Quinnipiac on Saturday, Oct. 8. The game is scheduled to be played at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., and will begin at Noon.
