ORONO, MAINE - The Providence College field hockey team fell to Maine, 7-1, in its season opener on Aug. 26 in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears entered the season just outside the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll Top-20 and improve to 1-0. Senior Kali Kilmer (Wayne, Pa.) scored the Friars' lone goal in the effort, while the Friars start the season 0-1.

Maine jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 6:33 of the game. Madison Cummings struck first off of a rebound at 1:56. Libby Riedl followed with back-to-back goals at 5:40 and 6:33, respectively. The Black Bears tacked on a fourth goal at the 13:31 mark as Samantha Wagg connected on a penalty corner, assisted by Riedl and Ella Mosky.

The Friars got on the scoreboard at 19:05 to make it a 4-1 game as Kilmer notched her first goal of the season, unassisted. It marked the first field goal of Kilmer's career at Providence, as her only other career goal came on a penalty stroke in 2015.

The Friars seemed to settle in defensively after collecting their first goal, but Maine's Brianna Ricker broke through to give the Black Bears a 5-1 lead with 1:05 remaining in the first half with an unassisted goal. Maine took its four-goal lead into the break at halftime.

The Black Bears opened the scoring in the second half with a pair of goals at 44:54 and 47:18 to take a 7-1 lead. Cummings struck first for her second tally of the day, while Ricker followed for her second goal as well.

Providence recorded five penalty corners in the second half of play, but the Friars were unable to capitalize.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Guilbert (Morganville, N.J.) played all 70 minutes for Providence and tied her career high with eight saves. Emma Cochran played the first 35 minutes in goal for Maine, allowed one goal and did not make a save. Emma Corbett played the second half and recorded two saves.

Providence College returns to action on Saturday, Aug. 27 against Sacred Heart. The game will be played at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono, Maine and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. The Friars will host Vermont in their home opener at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. on Sept. 2 at 6:00 p.m.
