PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College men's hockey Head Coach Nate Leaman announced the Friars' 2016-17 schedule on Monday (July 11). The 34-game docket features 12 games against non-conference opponents and 22 matchups against Hockey East foes.
Coming off its second highest win total in program history (27) and its first ever share of the Hockey East regular season crown, Providence will kick things off with an exhibition game against Acadia University on Sunday, Oct. 2. The regular season opens the following weekend at Schneider Arena against Miami on Oct. 7-8, which marks the sixth consecutive season that the Friars and RedHawks will face off. The Friars grabbed a win and a tie in the season-opening series last season in Oxford, Ohio.
Providence will hit the road for the first time on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Holy Cross in a game played at the DCU Center in Worcester. The Friars' only other game at the DCU Center came last March in the NCAA Northeast Regional Semifinal versus Minnesota Duluth.
The Friars will welcome both North Country opponents in Clarkson and St. Lawrence on Oct. 21-22 in the first meetings with both schools since 2007.
Hockey East play opens on Friday, Oct. 28 at Boston College followed up by the 31st Mayor's Cup game at Brown on Oct. 30. The Mayor's Cup battle between cross-town rivals returns to a one-game format after having a two-game set in the previous two seasons. The Friars claimed last year's Mayor's Cup by a 7-5 goal differential after the team's split their two matchups.
On Nov. 5, Merrimack will visit Schneider Arena for a Saturday night tilt. The Friars were 4-0 against Warriors last season, including a two-game sweep in the Hockey East Quarterfinals. Overall, Providence outscored Merrimack 11-2 over four games in 2015-16.
After an idle weekend, the Friars return to action for a home-and-home set against Northeastern, the reigning Hockey East Tournament Champions, on Nov. 18-19. Providence concludes its season series at Merrimack on Friday, Nov. 25 before returning home the following night (Nov. 26) to take on Colgate.
December opens up with a home-and-home weekend against Boston University (Dec. 2-3) and a two-game road swing at RIT (Dec. 9-10) to conclude the first half of the schedule.
2016 Frozen Four participant Denver enters Schneider Arena for a pair to start the second half of the season on Dec. 30-31. The Friars will make their second appearance at Frozen Fenway on Jan. 7 with the conclusion of the season series against Boston College at historic Fenway Park. The Hockey East schedule continues with two home contests against Vermont (Jan. 13-14) and a home-and-home set with UMass Lowell (Jan. 20-21). The Friars have claimed six of the last seven meetings with the Catamounts, including a two-game sweep at Gutterson Fieldhouse last January.
After a two-game road trip to New Hampshire (Jan. 27-28), the Friars return home for a doubleheader against Maine (Feb. 3-4). Providence has won seven consecutive games on home ice and currently rides a 12-game unbeaten streak (11-0-1) against the Black Bears dating back to 2012.
A midweek tilt at UConn on Wednesday, Feb. 8 precedes the rematch against the Huskies three days later on Feb. 11 at Schneider Arena. The regular season concludes with two games at Notre Dame (Feb. 17-18) and a home-and-home series against UMass (Feb. 24-25).
The first round of the Hockey East playoffs takes place on March 3-5, followed by the quarterfinal round the following weekend (March 10-12). The Hockey East Semifinals take place on March 17 at the TD Garden with the championship game commencing on March 18.
