EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - Providence College men's hockey goaltender Nick Ellis has been named a nominee for the 2016 Mike Richter Award, which honors the most outstanding goaltender in NCAA men's hockey.
In its third season, the Mike Richter Award, presented by Let's Play Hockey and the Herb Brooks Foundation, announced its list of 26 nominees today (Feb. 26). The award will be presented by Mike Richter at the 2016 Frozen Four in Tampa, Fla.
The Friars have boasted nominees in all three years of the Mike Richter Award's existence, with Jon Gillies earning nominations in the previous two seasons for Providence.
Entering play this weekend, Ellis ranks third in the Hockey East in GAA (2.01) and tied for third in save percentage (.930), which also includes an even better 1.91 GAA and .934 save percentage in league games. He also was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for December after posting a 0.99 GAA and .963 save percentage in five games. This past week, he earned Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors after backstopping the Friars to a crucial two-game sweep over then No. 7 Notre Dame.
In total, Ellis ranks fourth nationally with 21 wins this season and has also notched three shutouts. He also checks in with 20 games of surrendering two or fewer goals and a .938 save percentage in third periods and overtimes this season.
