Providence, R.I.- The Providence College women's volleyball squad upended St. John's, 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19) in a Big East Conference contest at Alumni on Sunday afternoon. The win was the first Big East win of the season for the Friars.
The first set saw neither team with more than a two-point advantage during the early going. Providence (13-11, 1-7 Big East) took their largest lead of the set, 14-11 on a service ace by senior defensive specialist Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.). St. John's (12-10, 3-6 Big East) battled back, however and tied the score on several occasions, including 21-21 after a Providence miscue. The Friars then reeled off the final four points of the set, including a pair of kills by freshman outside hitter Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), to take the 25-21 win in the set and 1-0 advantage in the match. Alderson and freshman outside hitter Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) each had six kills in the set for Providence as the Friars hit a remarkable .444 (20 kills, 4 errors, 36 attempts) in the set. Freshman Gaia Traballi paced St. John's with four kills while freshman setter Erica DiMaulo tallied 12 assists in the set for the Red Storm.
The second set again had back and forth action early on with no more than two points separating both teams and the set tied 12-12 after a St. John's attacking error. The Friars took a 14-12 lead after a kill by sophomore middle blocker Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.), forcing the visiting Red Storm to call a timeout. The Friars led by as many as four points several times late in the second set and an attacking error by the Red Storm gave PC the 25-22 win in the set and 2-0 advantage in the match. Senior outside hitter Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) notched seven kills and three digs in the set for the Friars while Veverka added five kills in the win. Mona Karkkainen led the way for St. John's with four kills and one block in the loss.
St. John's took control of the third set early and held the 8-4 advantage after blocks assists by DiMaulo and junior middle blocker Julia Cast. Providence rallied, however and a kill by Impellizeri knotted the set at 9-9, forcing a St. John's timeout. The two teams then battled back and forth throughout the third set before the Red Storm went on a run late, taking the 21-18 lead on a kill by Cast. St. John's then pulled away late to take the 25-21 win and cut the PC lead to 2-1 for the match.
Providence jumped out to the early lead in the fourth set, going up 10-2 on a service ace by Fitzgerald to force the Red Storm into a timeout. St. John's battled back and cut the gap to just three points late in the set, but it wouldn't be enough as the Friars used a 7-2 run, capped by a St. John's hitting error to take the 25-19 win in the set and the 3-1 match victory.
Fitzgerald notched a double-double for Providence with 16 kills and 11 digs while Alderson also notched a double-double for the Friars with 12 kills and 11 digs. Veverka notched 15 kills and four blocks while junior setter Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) tallied 54 assists in the victory.
