PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The reigning national champion Providence College men's hockey team placed seventh in the 2015-16 USCHO.com preseason poll announced on Monday (Sept. 28).
Providence garnered six first-place votes in the poll and was among four Hockey East squads to earn a spot in the top-20. All four Hockey East teams (Boston College, Boston University, Providence, and UMass Lowell) boasted at least two first-place votes. The Eagles topped the poll with 19 first-place votes, while Minnesota-Duluth (12), Boston University (6), North Dakota (1), and Denver rounded out the top five.
A record number 10 teams earned first-place votes in the USCHO.com preseason poll, which is voted on by coaches, media, and other personnel working in college hockey.
The Friars' 2015-16 regular season schedule opens up against 11th-ranked Miami next week, as Providence travels to Oxford, Ohio to take on the RedHawks in a two-game set from Oct. 9-10. In total, Providence is slated for 11 games against preseason top-20 opponents this season.
This year's edition of the Friars sees nine returning seniors, including leading scorer Nick Saracino (14-24-38) and newly minted captains, Tom Parisi and Kevin Rooney. Saracino was also named as an alternate captain alongside fellow senior Mark Jankowski.
The Friars open up the 2015-16 campaign with an exhibition contest against Simon Fraser on Saturday (Oct. 3). Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. at Schneider Arena.
