OMAHA, Neb. - The sixth-seeded Providence College women's soccer team was defeated in the BIG EAST Championship game versus No. 4 seed Butler, 1-0, on Sunday, Nov. 8 in Omaha, Neb. The Friars finished the season as the BIG EAST runner-up with a 13-8-1 record (5-4 BIG EAST).
This was the Friars second appearance in the BIG EAST Championship game, with the Friars last appearance in 1993 when Providence claimed their first BIG EAST title with a 1-0 win over UConn.
The Friars opened up the game holding possession, including a shot from senior Lauren Elia (Erie, Pa.) with a minute into the game. However, at the 19:14 mark the Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 lead. Butler's corner kick taken by Serina Kashimoto set up the eventual game winner. Kashimoto's kick bent to the middle of the net where Jamison Midgley was positioned to chip the ball in. It was Midgley's second goal of the season.
The first half closed with the Friars trailing by one goal (1-0). The Friars held the advantage in shots (9-6). Junior Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) registered two saves in the first, while Butler goalkeeper Madison Card made one save.
PC's best opportunity to score came in the 60th minute when junior Hannah Wear (South Salem, N.Y.) took a free kick that was on frame, but saved by Card. Zimmerman took a free kick in the 82nd minute that was right on target, but also saved by Card.
The clock wound-down and the Friars were unable to tally the equalizer. The Friars held the advantage in shots (16-10), as well as corner kicks (3-2).
For the game, Shea made two saves, while Card made four saves to secure the shutout.
The All-Tournament team, which was selected by coaches in the Tournament, was also announced. Zimmerman, sophomore
Christina Klaum (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and senior
Kathryn Hiller (Dartmouth, Mass.) were three of 11 named to the team. Zimmerman was also named the BIG EAST All-Tournament Most Outstanding Offensive Player. Zimmerman scored a goal in the 1-1 tie versus Georgetown in the BIG EAST Semifinal game on Nov. 6. She also converted a Penalty kick, which allowed the Friars to advance to the BIG EAST Final game over Georgetown (4-2).
