BOSTON -- The Providence College men's hockey team was honored in two categories at the inaugural "Globies Presented by Mercedes-Benz" on Tuesday night (Oct. 6) at the House of Blues in Boston.  The Friars claimed Globies for "Best Comeback" and "Best College Moment", with Head Coach Nate Leaman on hand to accept the accolades.

The Globies are a first-of-its-kind sports awards celebration that will honor the best of the New England sports scene on and off the field.  The Boston Globe Sports Department selected nominees from the best athletes, teams, individuals, performances and moments of the past year. Nominees were announced in 21 categories, including Best Moment, Unsung Hero, Top College Athlete, Mercedes-Benz Athlete of the Year and the MGM Springfield Best Comeback award.

"This list of nominees encompasses the best of what New England has to offer in sports achievement at the professional and collegiate levels," Joe Sullivan, Sports Editor Boston Globe said. "It was extremely difficult to narrow the field with all of the amazing individuals, dominant team performances and unforgettable moments over the last year."

The team was bestowed the Globie for "Best Comeback Presented by MGM Springfield" after rallying past Boston University in the National Championship game in dramatic fashion with two goals in the final 8:36 of play. In a stacked category with many worthy nominees, Providence stood tall and outlasted the likes of the New England Patriots' Super Bowl comeback, as well as the personal comeback of Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.  The Friars also earned a Globie for "Best College Moment", edging out Tufts softball, Northeastern men's basketball, and Harvard's men's basketball and football teams.

NESN will broadcast a replay of the event on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 10 p.m.

Turning the page to 2015-16, the Friars open up regular season action at Miami University on Friday, Oct. 9 in Oxford, Ohio.
