With Providence down 16-12 in the first set, the Friars put together a 9-2 run to take a 21-18 advantage. Navy came back to take a 23-21 lead but the Friars again battled back, this time tying the game at 23. However, the Midshipmen rallied to score the last two points of the set and take the set, 25-23.
The second set went to extra points as the teams were close through the whole stanza, tying seven times. Providence captured the set, 27-25 to bring the match to 1-1. Sophomore Marina Rose (Coventry, Conn.) led the Friars with four kills in the set.
Navy won the third set (25-16) and a competitive fourth set (25-23) to win the match, 3-1.
Junior Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) tallied a team-high 19 assists while freshman Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) contributed 15 assists. Defensive specialist Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) had a team-best 14 digs.
Navy was led by Katie Sylakowski and Gaby Smith who had 17 and 11 kills, respectively. Star Steele tallied 29 assists while Rachel Fortner added 20. Alli Graf had a team-high 21 digs for the Midshipmen.
The Friars return to action tomorrow when they face The Citadel at 1:00 p.m. and Southern Utah at 4:00 p.m.
