On Thursday, October 23, the Providence College Athletic Department in conjunction with the Career Education Center and Office of Academic Support held its fifth annual Student-Athlete Career Night. The event was made possible through the generous support of Mark Mandell and Yvette Boisclair '84 who have sponsored the event since its inception.

More than 100 student-athletes from the junior and senior classes attended the event held in '64 Hall. The night kicked off with Dan Textor '13 addressing the student-athletes about the impact that the event has had on his life. Dan was a member of the lacrosse team during his time at Providence and had the benefit of attending career night. It was there that he forged a relationship with Karl Anderson '88 that ultimately lead to a job offer in the financial industry. Dan appreciated Mandell and Boisclair for the gift of opportunity that they provided him.

Mandell then spoke to the student-athletes about the power of network and the doors that can be opened when that network is embraced.

The speaking portion of the event culminated with special guest Dr. Shiela Harrity '87. Harrity was a member of the Friar basketball team during her time at Providence and was named the 2014 National Principal of the Year for her outstanding leadership at Worcester Technical High School. Harrity's college teammate and classmate, Doris Burke '87 introduced Harrity through a video to kick off her speech. Harrity's message to the student-athlete's centered on hard work and eliminating boundaries. Her efforts and leadership at Worcester Technical High School have allowed her students to benefit from having General Colin Powell and President Barack Obama visit their school. These opportunities were made possible because of the vision of Dr. Harrity.

Following the speaking program, student-athletes enjoyed dinner and had the opportunity to network with professionals from various industries including education, finance, law, marketing, medicine and sports administration.

"This has become a signature event for our student-athletes," Providence College Athletic Director Bob Driscoll said. "We are extremely grateful for the generous support of Mark and Yvette to make this night possible. The relationships that our student-athletes build at this event have opened doors for them to obtain meaningful careers that they are passionate about. Ultimately this is at the core of our mission at Providence College."

In addition to sponsoring the Student-Athlete Career Night, Mark Mandell and Yvette Boisclair '84 have also established endowed and immediate use scholarships to provide the gift of opportunity and education to Providence College student-athletes.
