PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team erupted for four goals in the second half to defeat Kent State, 6-2, on Monday, September 3 in Providence, R.I. Six different Friars scored in the victory, as the team earned their first victory of the season. Previously, the team had fallen in back-to-back overtime games against nationally-ranked opponents.

In the first half, the two teams traded goals and went into halftime deadlocked at 2-2. Kent State got on the scoreboard first just 8:07 into the game as Rebecca Lee found the back off the cage on a corner. She received the pass on the left side of the circle and put the ball into the lower right of the cage. Sabrina Binder was credited with the assist.

The Friars tied the game, 1-1, in the 18th minute as sophomore Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) scored off a direct shot on a penalty corner. Junior Sally Adua (Madison, Conn.) and junior Caitlin Malone (Ossining, N.Y.) earned assists on the play.

Kent State regained its lead in the 25th minute as Alexis Madiera fed a ball to Karleigh Carlin at the left post. The Friars came right back to tie the game, 2-2, in the 31st minute as sophomore Kaleigh FitzPatrick (Dedham, Mass.) scored, unassisted, off a shot from the right side of the circle.

Providence took its first lead in the 44th minute as freshman Emma Mackie (Delta, British Columbia) connected on a hard, low shot from the top of the circle. Malone was credited with the assist on the play as she dumped the ball back and to the left for Mackie.

The Friars took a two-goal lead (4-2) on an unassisted goal by sophomore Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) in the 55th minute. She slammed home a rebound off the goalkeeper's pads on the left post.

Malone got a goal of her own, unassisted, in the 59th minute to put Providence ahead, 5-2. She carried the ball into the right side of the circle and drilled a low shot into the near side of the cage. Junior Hillary Anderson (Barrington, R.I.) finished off the scoring barrage in the 68th minute, as she collected a loose ball behind the goalkeeper and tapped it into the cage, unassisted.

Providence's six goals in the contest mark the most scored in a single game by the Friars since the 2009 season, when they defeated Georgetown, 8-0.

Sophomore Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) earned her first collegiate victory in goal for Providence with five saves. Senior Kathi Weidman (Millersville, Pa.) also saw action in the game and recorded two saves. Jahna Jordan took the loss for Kent State and posted five saves on the day.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, September 8 against Harvard in a non-conference match. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
