PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team earned its second-straight victory of the season on Saturday, September 8 as it defeated Harvard, 3-0. The Friars improve to 2-2 overall, with their only losses coming to nationally-ranked opponents. Harvard drops to 1-2 overall.
The Friars took a 2-0 lead into halftime, as the squad converted both of their goals on penalty corners. In the 11th minute, sophomore Steph Guglielmo (Castle Rock, Colo.) found the back of the cage on a shot from the left side of the circle. Junior Caitlin Malone (Ossining, N.Y.) was credited with the assist. Just under six minutes later (16:12), Providence took a 2-0 lead on a direct shot from sophomore Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany). Malone and sophomore Kaleigh FitzPatrick (Dedham, Mass.) earned assists on the play.
Providence added a third goal in the second half to take the shut-out victory as FitzPatrick deflected in an initial shot taken by Tietze in the 53rd minute. Tietze was credited with the assist on the play.
The Friars outshot the Crimson, 18-5, and held a 13-4 advantage in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Kathi Weidman (Millersville, Pa.) earned the victory in goal with three saves and improves to 1-0 on the season. Cynthia Tassopoulos notched 11 saves for Harvard in the loss.
The Friars return to action on Tuesday, September 11 against Holy Cross at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played in Worcester, Mass.
