Field Hockey Rallies To Defeat Holy Cross, 3-2

WORCESTER, MASS. - The Providence College field hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Holy Cross, 3-2, on Tuesday, September 11 in Worcester, Mass. Sophomore Steph Guglielmo tallied the game-winning goal with 6:53 left in regulation on a penalty corner.

The Crusaders got two goals in a span of two minutes to take a 2-0 lead in the first half. Carly Grimaudo found the back the cage each time at the 22:38 and 24:40 mark. Her first goal was assisted by Megan Bourne, while the second was unassisted.

The Friars were able to cut the deficit to one goal (2-1) with 4:34 remaining in the first half, as junior Brittany Ross (Scarborough, Maine) deflected in an initial shot taken by Guglielmo. Guglielmo was credited with the assist on the play.

In the second half, the Friars tied the score, 2-2, at 43:58. Sophomore Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) found the back of the cage off a direct shot on a penalty corner. Junior Caitlin Malone (Ossining, N.Y.) and sophomore Kaleigh FitzPatrick (Dedham, Mass.) earned assists on the play.

Guglielmo was set up for the game winner at the 63:07 mark as graduate student Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) fed her a pass 10-yards out on the left side of the circle. Abrams was awarded the assist, marking her first collegiate point as a Friar.

Providence outshot Holy Cross, 22-6, and held a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners. Senior Kathi Weidman (Millersville, Pa.) earned her second victory in goal with two saves.

Providence returns to action on Friday, September 14 against Georgetown. The game will be played at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md. It is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
