PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College lacrosse team opens its 2011 season this Saturday, February 26, when they travel to Staten Island, N.Y., to take on Wagner. The game gets underway at 12:00 p.m. at Wagner College Stadium.
Scouting the Friars: Providence (0-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) is looking to rebound from a 0-14 campaign a season ago. The Friars return just five seniors, but do return their leading point and goal scorers from last season. Junior Jake Nolan (Westport, Conn.) led the Friars in points, with 16 points, on three goals and 13 assists in 2010. Senior Evan Helda (Charlotte, N.C.) led the squad with 10 goals. The team also returns senior co-captains Mike Feldberg (Voorhees, N.J.), Steve Lydon (Braintree, Mass.) and Jake Goodelman (Wantagh, N.Y.). Feldberg was second on the team in goals (nine) a season ago, in addition to recording one assist.
Also returning is goalkeeper Christian Dzwilewski (Huntington, N.Y.), who played in 10 games last year, posting an 0-8 record. The junior participated in the 2011 World Lacrosse Championships as part of the first-ever Polish National Team, appearing in every game for Poland and helping them to a 5-3 mark and 14th place finish.
The Friars bring 21 freshman in to the fold this season, making up more than half the roster. Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.) and Robert Fleming (Washington, D.C.) are expected to play a role on the attack as rookies, while Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) and Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.) could make immediate contributions to the midfield and Zach Rogers (Rollins Hills Estates, Calif.) may see time on defense.
Scouting the Seahawks: Wagner (0-1, 0-0 Northeast) will host Providence in its home-opener, after traveling to Piscataway, N.J., for a 17-5 loss to Rutgers. The Seahawks, formerly fellow members of the Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference with Providence, were picked to finish sixth in the Northeast Conference. The Seahawks posted a 1-14 mark a season ago, losing three games by just one goal.
They are led by sophomore midfielder Cody Isdaner, who was a member of the NEC All-Rookie team last season after scoring 27 points on 17 goals and 10 assists. Classmate Colin O'Rourke recorded 23 points on 18 goals and five assists, also claiming NEC All-Rookie honors. Isdaner registered a hat trick in the season-opening loss at Rutgers.
Freshman Nicholas Gibaldi started in goal for Wagner against Rutgers, making eleven saves in three quarters. Junior Peter Rubin was between the pipes for the fourth quarter, making two saves. Wagner was outshot 41-21 by the Scarlet Knights.
The Series: Providence and Wagner have met 10 times, all from 2000-09 as members of the MAAC. The Friars have won every meeting, including five in Staten Island. The last meeting was at Wagner in 2009, with the Friars taking a 12-4 decision. The first meeting was in Fairfield, Conn., in 2000, a 19-2 Friar win.
On-Deck: The Friars open up their home schedule on Sunday, March 6, when they host Presbyterian at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex at 1:00 p.m. It's the first of three-straight home games for Providence, as they host Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 12, and Massachusetts on Tuesday, March 15.
