PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team beat Southern University 59-53 on Tuesday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Sophomore guard Gerard Coleman (Boston, Mass.) led all players with a game-high 21 points and posted his first career double-double with 11 rebounds. Freshman LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Mich.) added 11 points.
It is the second straight year the Friars have started the season 4-0. Providence made 32-of-47 attempts from the line (68.1 percent).
The Friars shook of an early 15-15 tie midway through the first half and led 23-21 with 4:58 left in the first half. Providence then pushed its lead to nine and held a 30-21 lead at half. Henton and sophomore Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) each went 4-for-4 from the free throw line to help the Friars shoot 73.1% from the line (19-of-26). Henton led the team in scoring at the half, with nine points and grabbed four rebounds. Coleman contributed eight points, five rebounds and an assist off the bench for Providence.
Southern's Mike Celestin led all scorers at the half, scoring 11 points.
In the second half, the teams were tied 43-43 with 8:32 left in the contest. Providence went on a 13-5 run and led 56-48 with less than a minute to go, but Southern did not go away quietly. The Jaguars scored five points in the last 0:48 seconds, but PC held on.
Coleman and Council combined to notch the final 12 points for the Friars over the last 4:38 of the game.
Coleman entered the game with a total of 15 rebounds over the first three games of the season and finished with a career-best 11.
Southern entered the game averaging 9.7 turnovers per game and totaled 19.
Providence made just 13-of-49 field goals in the game. It is the fewest number of made field goals in the modern era of PC basketball. The previous low of 14 was set four times, most recently on Nov. 18, 2006 against Brown. The school record for fewest field goals is four against Crescent A.C. on Jan. 1, 1927.
The Friars return to action on Friday, Nov. 25 at 8:30 p.m. ET in the third game of the South Padre Island Invitational. Providence will take on Iowa State in South Padre Island, Texas.
