Providence Women's Soccer Defeats American Univeristy, 1-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -The Providence College women's soccer team defeated American University, 1-0, on Sunday, August 29 to improve to 3-0 on the season. It marks the second time the Friars have started the season 3-0 under Head Coach Jim McGirr and only the third time in the program's history. Graduate student Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute when she received the ball from freshman Tota Olafsdottir (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland) and tucked in the right corner of the net.

In the first half, the Friars tallied eight shots had a great opportunity in the 13th minute. Senior Kate DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.) dribbled through the defense and took a shot from the top of the six-yard box and missed just left of the net. In the 43rd minute, American would have a scoring opportunity when freshman Samantha Totta took a shot, but senior defender Marra Whaley (Rocky Hill, Conn.) blocked the shot and ensured the game was tied going into the half.

In the second half, the offense would come alive as the Friars notched 15 shots. Camburn's goal in the 65th minute proved to be the game winner. Camburn has six points on two goals and two assists on the season.

Senior goalkeeper Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) earned the win and her third shutout. It marks the third straight shutout for the Friars who have yet to allow a goal on the season. The Friars finished with a 23-3 shot advantage, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal.

The Friars are back in action on Friday, September when they travel to Albany, N.Y. to take on Siena University at 4:00 p.m.
