Men's Hockey Announces 2010 Team Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's hockey team announced its annual awards on Thursday, April 8 during the team's 2010 Awards Banquet held at Schneider Arena.

Senior defenseman Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) earned four awards, including the Lou Lamoriello Most Valuable Player Award. Fayne played in all 34 games and finished third on the team with 22 points on five goals and a career-high 17 assists. In addition, Fayne earned Hockey East Honorable Mention accolades. Fayne also was the recipient of the Mike Boback Award for most assists (17), shared the Ron Wilson Best Defensive Player Award and the Captain's Award. It marked the fourth consecutive season that Fayne received the Ron Wilson Best Defensive Player Award.

Senior John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.) also shared the Captain's Award. Despite an injury, Cavanagh played in 27 games and recorded three goals and two assists for five points. He served as PC's co-captain in each of his last two seasons.

Junior Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) earned the Team Academic Award, the Gates Orlando Award for most points and shared the Rob Gaudreau Award for most goals. MacKinnon played in all 34 games and led the team with a career-high 25 points on 12 goals and 13 assists. MacKinnon recorded his first career hat trick on February 19 against Boston University. He also had a 3.92 GPA during the fall semester.

Juniors Ben Farrer (Calgary, Alberta) and Paul Golden (Milton, Mass.) received the team's Thomas Eccleston Jr. Unsung Hero Award. Farrer played in 28 games despite suffering an injury, while Golden played in 12 contests.

Sophomore goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ontario) shared the Ron Wilson Best Defensive Player Award along with Fayne. Beaudry played in 31 of the 34 contests and recorded a .916 save percentage, which ranked in the top-20 nationally. In addition, Beaudry earned three Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors and was Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for October. Beaudry also totaled 906 saves this season, which ranks fifth all-time in PC's single season saves leaders.

Sophomore Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) shared the Rob Gaudreau Award for most goals. Bergland finished tied with MacKinnon with a career-high 12 goals. He also ranked second on the team with 23 points.

Alex Velischek (Kinnelon, N.J.) and Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) shared the Rev. Herman Schneider Most Valuable Freshman Award. Velischek played in all 34 games and recorded 12 points on one goal and 11 assists. Schaller played in 33 games and recorded two goals and three assists for five points.
