The Providence College men's basketball team (11-6, 3-2) fell to the #14 Marquette Golden Eagles (16-2, 5-0) by a score 91-82 on Saturday, January 17 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Senior Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) added 15 points and tied a career-high with 17 rebounds. The 17 rebounds was the most McDermott has registered in BIG EAST play. Sophomore Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) paced the Friars with 21 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.

The Friars jumped out to a 10-7 lead and pulled out to a 15-11 advantage on a 3-pointer by senior Jeff Xavier (Pawtucket, R.I.). A three-point play by senior Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) moved the score to 20-15 Friars and a Jonathan Kale lay-in off a nifty pass from Geoff McDermott gave PC a 26-17 lead with 9:06 to play in the first half.

A trey from Xavier put Providence up 37-30 and the Friars entered halftime with a 45-40 lead.

PC shot 55.9 percent (19-34) from the field in the first half and forced seven Marquette turnovers. Xavier and Brooks paced the Friars with 10 points each in the stanza.

In the opening minute of the second half, McDermott converted a lay-in to become the 41st Friar all-time with 1,000 career points. The basket gave PC a 49-42 lead and a Brooks 3-pointer put the Friars up 55-44 with 16:25 to go in the game. A thunderous dunk by junior guard Brian McKenzie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) moved the score to 59-46 Friars and on the next possession, Brooks threw a no-look pass to McDermott for the easy lay-in (61-48).

Over the next 6:53, Marquette used a 26-11 run to pull to within two at 74-72 and a dunk by senior Dominic James tied the score at 76 with 5:23 to go. Lazar Hayward drained a 3-pointer to give Marquette its first lead, 79-76, since 15:21 mark of the first half.

The Golden Eagles outscored the Friars 12-3 over the final 2:10 to move to 5-0 in BIG EAST play. PC shot 56.4 percent (31-55) from the field for the game and out-rebounded the Golden Eagles 38-to-27.
