PC is 2-0 against the Bearcats this season, including a 87-79 win at Cincinnati on January 7.
Providence jumped out to a 9-4 lead behind six points from senior Jonathan Kale (Mattapan, Mass.). A lay-in by senior Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) put the score at 17-13 Friars and Sharaud Curry (Gainesville, Ga.) found an open Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) to move PC ahead, 23-18, with 7:51 to go in the first half.
Cincinnati used an 11-2 run to take a 29-25 lead at the 2:17 mark, but the Friars immediately responded with a 7-0 run of their own to take a 32-29 halftime lead.
Providence effectively used Keno Davis' patented full court pressure to commit 10 steals in the half and converted the Bearcats 12 turnovers into 14 points. PC also held Cincinnati to only 12.5 percent (1-8) from the 3-point line in the first half.
Kale paced the Friars with eight points and pulled down five rebounds in the opening half.
The teams traded baskets for the first six minutes of the second half, with a three-point play by Hanke putting the score at 41-38 Providence. A 3-pointer by Curry extended the PC lead to 44-38 at the 12:01 mark of the second half and a strong move to the hoop by senior Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) lengthened the Friar lead to eight points with 9:06 to play in the game.
Minutes later, senior Jeff Xavier (Pawtucket, R.I.) kissed a runner off the glass and junior Brian McKenzie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) stole the ensuing Cincinnati inbounds pass and followed it with a dunk to propel the Friars to a 59-42 lead with 6:10 to go. The sequence was part of a 13-2 run for Providence.
Cincinnati responded with an 11-2 run to move to within eight but the Friars withstood the run, capped off by a McKenzie dunk with under a minute to play.
PC shot 47.1 percent (16-34) in the second half and dominated the Bearcats in the paint, holding a 50-to-24 point advantage for the game. The Friars hit 76.5 (13-17) percent of their free throws and are now 5-1 following a loss this season. Kale finished with 14 points and seven boards and Curry chipped in 12 points, four assists, four steals and no turnovers.
Senior Mike Williams paced the Bearcats with 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
The Friars are off until Thursday, January 22 when they travel to Newark, N.J. for a 7:00 p.m. tilt versus Seton Hall.
