AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) scored with 53 seconds left in the third period to lift the Providence College men's hockey team to a 5-4 win over UMass on Friday, January 16 at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass.
The Friars won a faceoff in the UMass zone and the puck came back to Taormina who unleashed a one-timer into the net at the 19:07 mark to seal PC's fourth consecutive victory. It marked PC's first four-game winning streak since 2005.
The Minutemen opened the scoring at 3:18 when James Marcou setup Michael Lecomte who tapped in his fourth goal of the season right in front. The Friars evened the scored at 12:46 when Taormina collected a loose puck at his own blue line and slid a pass up the middle to sophomore Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) who skated in on a breakaway. Despite being hooked on the play, Germain scored on a delayed penalty marking his second goal of the season.
The Friars scored two goals in the first 1:16 of the second period to take a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Austin Mayer (Providence, R.I.) scored his third goal of the season from the left circle just 54 seconds into the period. Just 22 seconds later, sophomore Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.) setup classmate Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) who ripped a one-timer from the slot past UMass goalie Dan Meyers. The Minutemen cut the lead to 3-2 at 5:29 when Casey Wellman scored from in close after a pass from Will Ortiz. PC regained its two-goal lead at 13:00 as freshman Andy Balysky (Randolph, N.J.) scored his second goal of the season. Senior Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska) stole the puck in the UMass zone and fired a shot that was saved by Meyers. The rebound went behind the net, but Balysky retrived the puck and came around before wrapping a back hander into the back of the net. With 19 seconds left in the period, the Minutemen pulled to within 4-3 on a Justin Braun slap shot from inside the blue line that eluded PC goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) who was screened in front.
The Minutemen evened the score with 2:35 left in the third period when Martin Nolet collected his second goal of the season from the left circle.
Freshman Alex Baudry (Cumberland, Ont.) made a career 42 saves including 14 in the third period. Meyers stopped 26 shots.
