ORONO, Maine. - The Providence College men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 overtime tie against the University of Maine on Sunday, January 18 at Alfond Arena. With the tie, the Friars moved to 6-12-2 overall and 3-8-2 in Hockey East play. Maine is now 10-9-3 and 5-6-2 in league play. Senior Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska) scored his second goal of the season in the third period to force overtime.
The Black Bears controlled much of the first period as they outshot the Friars, 12-4, but PC emerged with a 1-0 lead after the period when sophomore Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) recorded his third goal of the season. Sophomore Ian O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) collected a loose puck right in front and played it to Germain who fired a quick wrist shot past Maine goalie Scott Darling at 18:18.
The Black Bears scored two power-play goals in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Spencer Abbott scored from in close at 1:27 to even the score at 1-1. The Black Bears gained their first lead of the night as Gustav Nyquist skated down the left side before sliding a pass to Chris Hahn who fired a one-timer into the net at 16:14.
Mazzolini evened the score (2-2) in the third period as he stole a pass in the Maine zone and ripped a slap shot from the left wing and into the net at 2:35. Freshman Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ontario) made 40 saves to keep the Friars in the game.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, January 23 when they host Northeastern at 7:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena.
